Hi, Diamond hatchling born 17th Feb, not eating. written a couple of other threads and got a mixed result. First shed about 4 weeks ago, snap lock with heater mat at one end about 28-30 degrees. Other hatchlings in that clutch are eating, have spoken to breeder. Tried pinkys, braining and recently scenting. Thought i would try cutting a mouse in half tonight to see if that worked. No good plus the mrs got the dirts. When should i get worried as i dont want him to die, and breeder has offered to replace, but i got an attachment with this little fellow. Thanks in advance |

Have you tryed force feeding? If you don't know how to, I'd find an experienced reptile keeper to be able to show you how to..
Sounds the same as Sammy's BHP (Mlak Mlak) She had to force feed him for near 12 weeks before he started to take food by himself.

Also try rubbing the pinky against the body of the snake, sometimes they will throw a coil around it which then initiates a feeding response. Try offering at night time (8-9pm) with as little disturbance to the snake as possible.

| | Regular Member | | | | | bhp's and diamonds are a bit diff in regards to getting them feeding. Force feeding is also a last resort sort of thing, i would try a live fuzzy mouse that still has its eyes closed left in its tub over night, if it eats then well done if not remove the fuzzy, then next time try 3-4days later with another fuzzy in a light bulb box with the snake in it. All the diamond hatchy's i have dealt with have taken fuzzy mice easily as there first feed they seemed to prefer something with hair. good luck let us know how you go, as there are a few other tricks i can let you in on that have worked for me over the years pm me if you like.
Cheers Ricko

If the breeder who you got the snake from was local, I'd be asking them if they knew how to force feed and ask them for advice and help with getting him to feed.

Cheers Ricko | I know that Diamonds and BHP's are different to feeding, was just using that as an example lol..
Also... I thought that live feeding wasn't acceptable, from the other threads that have been on here.

I normally have success getting juvenile Diamonds to eat by dropping a live fuzzy mouse (eyes shut, walking around) into its enclosure just on dusk. Don't disturb the snake at all, just drop it in and leave. Make sure the snake is in a low traffic, dark area. Inside a cupboard is good.
Cheers
Jonno

Do it reasonably hard to get the snake agitated and often they will snap at the mouse and get it hooked on their teeth, if they do this they will often throw a loop around it and eat it. Try what Jonno says as well, the 2 opposite extremes but both work well.
If you have access to any little birds or day old chicks pluck a little bit of down off the breast of the bird and roll a pinky in it.
