hi everyone does anyone know how long a female python is gravid before a pre lay shed. None of the books ive read seem to cover this only that it is about 28-35 days after shed before they lay.
thanx carly

They are gravid from the first successful copulation to the pre lay shed, so, without great sugical or medical intervention or maybe a herpetological gynaecologist, my opinion is that noone can answer your question accurately. Can you Dugaduga? |

thanx it is a hard one so it is obviously different for all snakes or is there an average time between the last mating and pre lay sheds.

Problem is the last mating may not be the one that makes her gravid. This is why I say it is near impossible to state the period of time that you are after even if you witness ALL matings. For example, this year my Coastals copulated practically every other day for over a month. Now theres no way of knowing which bit of snakey fun did the job |

thats very sensible wish i thought of that, ive witnessed 3 matings but im not home very much even if i am home i dont usually watch them cos my female gets nervous and goes into her hide. do snakes only mate to reproduce or might they do it for fun? |

LOL, well they don't do it for "fun" only humans and rats are that lucky
They only do the wild thing to procreate BUT that doesn't mean that that they are fertile. In the absence of a herpetological gynaecologist the poor souls have no way of knowing if they are firing blanks or not Good on 'em though for trying anyway |

Oh yes, by the way, you're the first person that has ever said "that's sensible" to me! Careful or you'll ruin my reputation |

I think sperm is stored in the female, she ovulates follicles are then fertilised and then they are gravid. With that thinking, i would say a python is gravid typically 3 to 4 weeks prior to pre lay shed or just after ovulation if you were lucky enough to witness it. Could be wrong.
regards
Mark

Our childreni have their tails together so often it is not funny. We have observed them mating at least once per week for the last couple of months These guys are not just doing it for procreation. The female is quite obviously gravid and has recently had her pre lay shed. (... and you have some of their genes in your collection
Back on the original question. It is not unknown for a female to produce viable eggs for years after having been with a male so going by copulation is not much of a guide. My understanding is that eggs take around 18 months to develop (so if you get a dud clutch you may have to go back to what was hapening a year ago investigate the cause) so would you say they were gravid all that time?
This is probably a case of applying a mamalian model to reptiles and it really does not work that way.

As herptrader said, applying mammalian models to reptiles isn't really appropriate, they have eggs developing well before ovulation and very often it is months before they copulate. I'm not sure about the 18 month thing though, as 18 month old snakes can lay eggs in some cases, and I'm sure little 6 month old hatchlings aren't developing folicles.

A reptile isn't gravid till it actually ovulates, prior to then a female is still very capable of reabsorbing her unfertilised ova. Ovulation is when the ova passes from her ovaries into the oviducts, being fertilised in the process. From then on the female is gravid and can't reabsorb. Ovulation usually takes place 2-4 weeks prior to the females pre lay shed.
