hello! I am thinking of buying a stimsons python as my first ever reptile! the guy at the pet shop told me i require a category 3 licence and must be 18 I have to wait a few months because I'm 17. Is it difficult to get a licence, will I be able to get a licence even though I have no prior experience? also can anyone give me a rough estimate as to how much it will cost to buy the snake, enclosure etc? I'm thinking $1,000- $1,500? sorry about all the questions i just want to get a pretty good idea about what i'm in for Any other helpful information will be great!
thanks, Hannah

Move to the East coast and it will cost you less than $500 to start up.

For a hatchy, a tub, a heat mat, a thermostat and a water bowl you're probably lookoing at between $500-600 in WA. Add another few of hundred dollars a year or two later for a proper enclosure.

If you buy a stimmie you should be able to get the snake and a really nice enclosure for under $1000. I've found through experience that if you are going to buy an enclosure, think very carefully before you buy from someone interstate. There are unscrupulous people that will rip you off in a hearbeat. Buy local and you shouldn't have any problems
Good luck...

Easy as to get your permit just fill it in as best you can and send it off, they cant deny you it unless you have a criminal record or whatsever. Everyones gotta start somewhere .
As for a rough estimate that would depend on who your buying from age etc. I'm getting my first stimmie in a bout a week and a half from Dave - Pilbara Pythons. $350 for the little guy and since hes a hatchie im just keeping him in a click clack and so far all the gear has set me back around $180 from just shopping around and thats for things like a click clack, hide, water bowl, childrens python book (which is great lol), heat cord, F10 disinfectant, husbandry gear etc and a few plants/vines which i still need to pick up.
So for a real basic setup on a budget im guessin 500-600 but im sure other people might have diff opinions
btw what pet shop did you go to, pet magic?

thanks, Hannah | Hey Hannah,
If you or if you know of someone who is pretty handy, enclosures are not that difficult to build, just do your research re enclosure specs for your species of snake and you're off.
Good luck with it

Buy a baby, that way you can watch it grow. Check out this website http://www.pilbarapythons.com/pythonsforsale.htm they have some awesome Stimmies available for $350ea.

It doesnt really matter what you go for. Ive found some of the hatchies to be a little more awkward but once they are feeding ok, there is generally now problems as long as your enclosure/tub is set up appropriately. Wherever you get one, just check it over, looks good (healthy), good temprement and is feeding well. If looking at a shop dont hesitate to ask to have a loom at a few so you can get an idea and choose one you like.
As for price it varies, some ive paid very little for and some ive paid a lot more for. Dont pay too much for one either, there are apparently shops at the moment selling somt stimis for $495+ and there nothing special.General pricing is usually between $350 to $425. On another not wheatbelts and some others will fetch a higher price tag. Dont hesitate to ask questions either, or get a book, the more you ask and read the better and easier it will be.Be careful of bogus care or keeping courses either. Information is free so dont pay for it if you dont need to.
If you are unable to get the licence for a while you can get it in one of your parents names and when you are older and have your own licence you can transfer it over via a dealer.

Hi Hannah,
I went down to Pet Magic last week and they sell the enclosures that the stimson pythons are in (4ft I believe) for $440 ($800 fully set up). I have no idea if that is too much to pay.
I just checked out that Pilbara Python website and the SW carpet python is $250 cheaper there than Pet Magic. However, many of the snakes would be cheaper if we could buy interstate
What size enclosure would a fully grown Stimson Python need?

Hi you should have no trouble with your licence ,it will depend on what age Stimi you get as to how large an enclosure you may want, everyone has diffrent ideas I went for older ones it up to you,as far as enclosures go I have a 900mm x 600mm x 600mm repta pet and bottom cabnet they look great but if you happen to get one make sure you fill in the gaps between the 2 glass front doors or your stimmi will get out through the gap (10-11mm quite large) i know i learnt the hard way,I will be selling mine soon as I am building a larger multi compartment enclosure so if you still looking in a monthor so give me a yell ive added a pic to show you Attachment 24474 Attachment 24475
