Question How often should I be handling him?

I have a baby spotted python and I just want to hold him all the time...

How often is TOO often?

The more the better?

nope, he might get to stressed out.

Id recommend 20 - 40 mins a day. Other people might say otherwise, guess it depends on the person lol. But dont overdo it

IMO reptiles should only be handled when cleaning out enclosures (which is at minimum once a week anyway) or if showing to someone for educational purposes. They are not an affectionate pet like cats and dogs. Make a nice display enclosure and look at it through the glass!

If it is to build up your confidence in handling then once a week is enough!

All reptiles, or just pythons?

I have my beardies out all the time, they are pretty sociable little things and do not stress easily.

you have to decide whether you are going to do what is right for the snake as apposed to what you want. I rarely hold my animals but that is my choice, I can't see anything wrong with holding your little bloke for 5-10mins a couple of times a week.

From your other thread you said he's not biting which is good. Unless he is really stressing, a good way to tell is if he's wrapping very tightly around your hand, you should be able to handle for a short time daily. Don't handle for at least a day after a feed and he probably won't want to be handled near shedding time. Watch for the milky eyes to give you the heads up here.

i think you will find if it's your first snake you will be handling all the time for while. Eventually it will slow down.

i used to handle mine every couple of days for the first few months, now i just handle them for 5-10 minutes or so on the weekend in the sun and then for 5-10 minutes before i feed them and clean the enclosure. I think they prefer to be left alone.

However I do have a new snake now that is a bit flighty so it may get a little more handling until it calms down.

Hazzard has the good advice. If you want a pet to play with all the time get a dog. My herps get handled once a week for cleaning and my pythons get handled once every 8-10 days for feeding. That is it. They are not a cuddly pet.

Listen to Isis

Experienced keepers / breeders will tell you the above. I only handle mine when necessary to clean out their enclosure etc.

They may tolerate being handled but if you think you have 'trained them' your kidding yourself. A lot start out a bit snappy and whether handled or not, some calm down anyway with some age and size. It really has nothing to do with the 'handling training' (imo) most pythons settle down with age, and the ones that don't are the exceptions. Its just that with one or two pythons it 'may seem" like the training worked, but if you had "a control' python that was never handled, it would probably be as calm as the trained ones.

I have 17 Jungles and just handle them when I need to. Most settled down with age and are fine without any 'special training' whatsoever. I only have one really narky female over 18 months old. But with animals from say 3-12 months old thats when their most narky and thats usually the age when they go to a new home. But as I said most seem to settle with age and size. You can usually tell the ones that wont ever settle as well I think.

All that 'handling training stuff etc' is (imo) is a load of nonesense. (imo) its a newbie urban myth

But maybe a little chair and whip might work
