| | | How to tell if my snake is happy?
Hi,
Took the plunge and picked up my first python yesterday, a 9-10 month old Bredli.
So I've read all the advice about not handling, hot/cold areas, 2 hides etc but was wondering how you tell if you have it all right.
My set up is a 30w x 50h x 30d click clack with 2 hides, heat mat, infra globe, thermostat and climbing vines. Even put in a nice desert background to make him feel more at home.
Temps are 32 and 24.1 with a mid gradient of 27-29. (this is where he spends 90% of his time)
Apart from a brief sleep in the hot end hide to warm back up after travelling, my little fella is quite content to cruise the enclosure, bask on the vine and loves to extend up and say hello when you open the lid.
I am assuming he is showing no signs of stress of being ogled by the kids (who can't wait to feed and handle him) so I am assuming he is just a happy and content snake.
He is due for a feed on Sunday so am thinking of not waiting the usual week and see how he takes his first feed.

Everything sounds right (although I'm personally not sure about Bredli's and what sized click clack). But the temps are good, he has plenty of hides he can retreat to if he starts to feel overwhelmed... As long as you hold off on handling for awhile (and make sure the kids aren't bugging the snake every 5 minutes), then I'm sure he will happily settle in Sounds like he should readily take a feed aswell!
Get some pics when you can, too! I'd love to see him

Whoa, your snake sounds really laid-back. Yeah, if he's cruising around and curious, then don't bother waiting. He'll be fine.

sounds like he is settling in nicely. if you are going to feed on sunday i dont think it would be a problem as long as you dont handle him before then or if he shows signs of stress i.e hides all day/night. then obviously dont handle him for 2/3 days after his feed. if he's still active from now til sunday i honestly cant see that feeding him would be a problem.

Yeah if he was any more laid back i'd have to think about getting him some sunnies, a deck chair and a ice cold beer.
I was expecting this flighty, half scared snake, that hid 90% of the time, but what I ended up with is a beautiful boy that is happy to be on display.
Will take some photo's on the weekend

Congrats! We have a Bredli about the same age and she took a few months to really settle in but is now a real adventurer.
Just a note, has your click clack got clip locks on all four sides at the top? Bredli are really stong and ours loves to push at any possible opening to try and get out!

Well decided to offer him a feed and see what happens. Let's just say snake - 1, mice - 0.
Took the mouse without hestitation and devoured it just as fast.
Next hurdle - first slough
