Hypos (?) and stripes

Hi guys

Here’s a pic of my 4yo (supposed) Hypo Female Coastal, Kahlua.

She doesn’t have the light orange base colour that a lot of the hypos going around have, but in the true sense of the word I believe the amount of black on her is reduced. I bought her as a hatchling and was told she had 1 hypo parent.

Last season she was paired with this hypo guy, who has since passed away.

Their pairing produced these two girls, which, as you can see, look totally different from each other.

The lighter one has very pale eyes, that appear almost white at times. She’s got a pinkish-orange tongue, with a blue tip. This is what she looks like now, at about 14 months, with black speckling around the lighter patches and down her spine. She has an overall rusty colour.

This year Kahlua was paired with my striped coastal, General Pants.

Their pairing resulted in 13 hatchies, all with an overall red appearance, some with broken stripes down their spines but nothing as defined as their father. Here’s a sample.

The whole point of this post was to get people’s opinions on the possibility of passing on the hypomelanism and stripe traits onto these offspring. I don’t intend for this to turn into a heated debate on genetics though.

As mentioned earlier from the hypo-hypo pairing I got 1 hypo hatchie and 1 normal looking hatchie. From the hypo-stripe pairing I got about 3 hatchies that looked like Kahlua when she was young, and most have varying degrees of striping. From these results it would appear that the Hypomelanism and Striping is a co-dominant trait. Does that sound right? What are people’s thoughts on the pairing of 2 of the striped hatchies producing offspring with better stripes than theirs? Also, what are thoughts on the hypomelanistic traits of Kahlua, do you think she is hypo?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Jay

General pants is a cutie ;-) (Zippy told me to say that ;-) ;-) )

My experience with coastals is that the lighter the hatchlings the more interesting the patterns. They change a lot in their first 12 months but the lighter the hatchling the higher the contrast (lighter light colours) in the mature snake.

You have some interesting genetic material to play around with. It is a pity your hypo guy has passed away.

Beautiful coastals. I agree with hertrader, general pants is hot.

To those members currently working with stripes and hypos, are there any experiences or results you would like to share, eg Hypo-Hypo, Hypo-Normal, Stripe-Stripe, Stripe-Normal pairings?

Cheers

These are not coastals but my childreni have an inheritable stripe that runs down the spine of about 25% of the hatchlings. I only got two out of 11 this year one of which is already sold.

This is the photo from my Herp Trader ad 667-601.

The other striped one from this year is pictured in the attachment. She is due for a slough so does not look all that good in the photograph.

My hunch is that the stripiness in my childreni is a different sort of trait to what you have in your coastals in that it is purely driven by genetics. Only time and a breeding program will tell. It would be good if you could find a stripy female coastal to breed with.
