Talking I want a hatchie.

Ok, I've decided. I want a hatchy mac. But before I get one, I need to make sure I do all the research a responsible owner can do. So here goes

I will go for a plastic tub before i move into a permanent enclosure, but what equipment do I need? Just a heat mat and a hide?

Also how much room does one need? I currently breed mice in 20 litre plastic tubs, a snake would need a bigger one, right?

Thanks for any help guys, I wanna make sure I do everything right!

i put my hatchy into a lttle click clack, probably only about 2l.that was when i just got him at the age of two months, you will need plenty of ventellation, a small hide (i used a toilet roll, uncented) i little perch, water bowel, newspaper base and i put a small heat mat under the tub. not inside it. you should keep your temps around 32 degrees at the warm end and about 28 degrees in the cool end. Don't forget that they get lost easily at a young age.

this was the first was i set it up, i ended up giving him a smaller water dish because i put the heat mat under it more and the humidity rose a bit high, the perch he is on is a fake vine.
good luck with it.

Ok thanks, did you keep the lid on or off? I'd assume he would go for a little wander with it off?

I would assume he took the lid off for the photo then replaced it ..... no lid = no snake

a small hatchie can go in a 2 L tub for a few months then just increase the tub size as it grows , i have yearlings in 28 L tubs now and they are fine .....
Make sure you get a good secure lid with your tub , i use a brand from Woolies or coles called "sistema" , they are very secure and have never had any troubles with them ...

Heat mat under about 1/2 - 1/3 of the cage , put a hide in the hot end and the cold end that way the snake can hide in both . The more hides the better for a little one , i use toilet roll tubes , i normally crush one end so its only got one entrance .

You will also need a thermostat to regulate the temp's of your heat mat

Yeah I know that. So a thermo and heat mat would be the only new equip needed?

Also, how long is a maculosa hatchling when they are usually sold? (ie, feeding well and a few sheds?)
