information requied please

hi everyone! first, im a total noobie to this reptile thing. iv'e 2 spotted pythons and am to get another soon with the hope of learning the fundamentals of breeding reptiles. i have a few questions that i would like answers to. no matter how easy any input would be appreciated. question 1. what is the sientific name of this snake (my spotted pythons) and what is it refered to (in general by u guys)? because i find these snakes both beautiful and facinating i plan to add to my collection (which at the moment sadly dosent amount to much) the jungle carpet python and the black headed python (not necessarily to breed. at first!). question 2. is this a bad idea (cause im totally inexperienced at the moment)? if so what snake\s would be recommended for an amateur ? all input is welcome (obviously) and i thank all in advance.

Hey timmy,

Antaresia maculosus, usually referred to as a maccie or spotted python. How old are they? To breed them, you need to be set up with temperature controlled enclosures for them (which I'm sure you are) and be prepared to incubate the eggs...most people use a home made incubator.

I think those snakes are fine, especially if you've had experience already with your spotteds, jungle's have a reputation for being bitey and some believe they are a more of a display animal. I haven't found that in my experience, ours have a lovely temperment, but there is exceptions to every rule. BHPs are great snakes, can't recommend them highly enough, but they usually are between $800 - $1500 depending on age, sex, etc.

A bredli python is also an awesome snake to begin with, very nice looking as well...as is your typical coastal carpet python and one of my favourites - murray darling pythons. You could also get others in the Antaresia group which are smaller pythons like your spotteds, these are children's pythons and stimson pythons (Antaresia childreni and Antaresia stimsoni).

i have had my maccies (see you've already taught me someting) for a year or so but other than that i don't know much. i have used this (and other) sites to make (almost) an incubator. i've done all my homework on the spotted pythons (i hope) and don't think i'll encounter any proplems. any major problems with breeding them would also be appreciated. does anyone have a picture of a bredli python!

Good on you for doing your research, sounds like you really looked into breeding well.

There's some pics of bredls on this for sale ad, and I'm sure others will be happy to put up some pictures of there's.

so the sientific name for the spotted python is Antaresia maculosus. my mate told me it was liasis maculosus. what is liasis maculosus? other than the bredli python, (that no one has any pics for, sorry if i seem pushy) thats all for amatuer snake keepers?.

Some still refer to it as Liasis...it used to be classified under that name, but is now known as Antaresia.

There are pictures above that Spike put up, also I put a link above to some pics, also if you read my post again I suggested 4 other pythons that I think are good starters.
