I just seen an ad from a pet and aquarium store, MD python $695 each. I thought that was rather high....
I just found another ad for the same place, BHP yearling $1119.

If you want to knock a pet store's prices then maybe you could sell your animals to them, accepting less than you think they are worth, so that pet stores can be competitive with their prices. Pet shops are in business to make money, and to cover overheads such as rent, power, buying and feeding animals all costs money that comes out before they see profit. Breeders don't have to extra overheads to worry about so can afford to sell them cheaper.

Childrens in one were $380 and in the other were $420 ...and adult beardies were like $375-470 ...babies were at least $175 !!! Some golden retrievers were $800 WITHOUT papers ! And don't even get me started on their fish! I thought that the pricing was shocking for any animal!....But who knows...that maybe normal petshop prices....has anyone seen any of those animals for that price in petshops before???....is that normal or is it just the petshops where I am...??? |

So for them to have these high prices they are obviously buying their snakes at the same price breeders sell them for privately, and 100% mark up gives them price they have. So it would be normal for any petshop.
I paid $400 each for my stimsons from a private breeder so $500 isn't that much different but for a pet store to attempt to gain double mark up, I can't see how they manage to move them. They should be talking the sellers down in price to keep the prices balanced or not take them at all. Well, thats how I operate anyway. We can't have reptiles in NSW shops but the same rule applies with all our animals.

Not sure if the reptiles are better off, but the dogs that are supplied to most petshops are from Puppy Farms, or Backyard Breeders & live in appalling conditions.
The staff at most pet shops have no idea on the proper care for the animals, they give out ithe wrong info on the animals (when I got a guinea pig years back they advised me to feed it oranges & carrots as the main diet ).
PP is the worst place, they should be closed down.
I wont buy from any petstore that sells live animals (as pets).
