Hi guys,
At the risk of going over old material I just wanted to know if a Diamond Python is a good first timers snake. I'm hopefully picking up a hatchling this weekend and just wanted to hear some thoughts.
I've have read in the past that they are not ideal for a beginner?? Is this just because of Diamond Syndrome or are there other issues that are present in this species but not in others. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
As first timers, we're really after something placid and easily handled.
Cheers

Forgot to mention that we live on the Central Coast of NSW so Diamonds are locals. Seemed logical to start with something that's used to the climate. Also, I think they're pretty good looking - that's probably the main reason we want one!!

Hi christian, now i'm no expert but have just been through what you are going through in choosing a snake and from what i gathered from books, web sites and info from all the lovely people on this site is that all snakes are individuals and there are no guarantees on a snappy one or not. Personally I chose a coastal carpet after years of deliberation, but BE WARNED!!! This is an extremely addictive hobby!!! I'm already onto my second snake and with much deliberation have decided on a Bredli! I was also looking at diamonds and hope to get one in the future, they are beautiful! I have read a bit on their lighting requirements (uva/uvb) and also about the diamond syndrome but i think if you read up and gain some knowledge, following the necessities etc and advice from the helpful people here, you will be happy with your choice! Good Luck!

Cheers Tan. I've read up on the lighting requirements as well and it doesn't really seem like a drama at all. I remember reading somewhere that they can have bone developement issues if they grow too fast. I can't remember where I read it so any advice on that would be great.
...and yes, go the Cowboys!!!

Diamonds are excellent for a first snake. They are docile and friendly snakes that grow to a managable size, but you should only get one if you intend on having them outside when they get big enough or if you intend on keeping them as diamonds should be kept, and not treat them like a Carpet. They will need cool evening temps and a cooling period during winter.
Many do say these arent ideal for beginners and i do believe that that is due to DPS, but as long as you're willing to do what's right for the snake from the start, then there's no reason why you shouldnt get a diamond.

I would say diamonds would be the best snake for you, just make sure it is feeding well when you get it (being your first snake you won't wont to get a difficult feeder) I purchased one for my brother who wanted his first snake and he loves it.

I think he means lower cage temps and feeding less often as they have slower growth. Just adapting for DP needs, not like most other carpets. Quote: |
