i would say yes... not sure what the temp range is but there is deffinately a certain temperature to keep it at.

I would also say yes because wild reptiles use radiant heat sources such as roads and large rock formations to maintain their temps at night, even up north.

Hey Markinaus, I live an hour away from ya. I keep a spotted python and he does great on a 25 watt heat cord (Stokeh at Animal Attraction sells these cords for just under $30 and they are magic. I'm considering getting a 15 watt cord for sumemrtime use, though I've been told because spotted pythons are native to this area, they may not need it.

You need to give snakes a gradient temperature range in their enclosure..a hot spot for them to digest their food and a cooler area they can use. Therefore they can choose their own temperature according to what they need. Temperature range is around 22-34 degrees, but it seems some people have differing opinions on this lately.
Just watch the heat cords too, been a lot of people lately finding they have caught on fire. We use them with spiders, but have them monitored extremely well with them on a timer turning off and on every 10 minutes so they don't overheat, and we don't put any weight on them. My other half used to be a sparky for years so I listen to him with these things  . Above heating with lights, ceramics etc and a rock underneath for a basking spot is good, or a good quality heat mat.

Nome, is it faulty wiring that makes them go up in fire, or is it the super high heat they give out like the big 75 - 100+ watt cords? These little 15-25 watt ones are flat out making 28 - 30 degrees.

As the Lovely Nome said  heat cords can catch on fire at times, it can be faulty wiring but it's more likely to happen from inproper use of them.
Placing them near flamable things like paper is not a good idea, placing them under things like fish tanks can cause them to get hot spots in them which can make them go up, kinda the same way electric blankets can.
I think for heating enclosures with heat cord using flase floors etc is a good way, also low wattage ones are better.
Heat cord are no less safe than things like heat tape if not used properly.

hi,
we use hotrocks in winter with our adults, we use 25watt bulbs with our hatchlings, i've just set up some 15 and 25 watt heat cords between 2 tiles run through a dimmer for my bhp's and sub adult coastals, but in summer we turn off all heating as we don't need it where we live, i'm in mackay and lived in rocky for a few months and don't think you would need heat in summer, but thats just the way i do things, i know people that use no heat at all up this way, and i've seen their reptiles and they are doing ok, but i always use some type of heat in winter just in case they want to use it,
cheers,
steve.........

The heat cords all give out the same temp i think, the higher wayyages are there because the actual cord is longer. Correct me if i am wrong...
Cheers Alex

Yep, that was my understanding. I had a 15W and a 60W and they felt the same temp to me. 15W was one metre, the 60W is four metres.

IT is good to supply some heat even in summer as some species are surprising, like a friend of mine observed a bhp sunning outside a hollow log on a sunny day west of marlborough north of rocky inthe middle of summer. It was so hot his mate was sitting under a bridge on the crystal highway.I like heat always available on one end and an end thats cold as i can get it,if a snake wants to breed it cool itself or wants heat its always available.I use a little tempgun and the ClikOn ClikOff plug in dimmer system to control lights and heat pads, great for toning things down in summer. |
