I would still recommend feeding off the substrate.

I use sand as a substrate, but I never feed on it. Either take your snake out and feed in a click clack or put some newspaper down on the section where your snake will be feeding and keep an eye on it. My Stimmi knows that when the paper goes in it is feeding time and races out of his hide.
