i know people who have hundreds of snakes and swear on aquarium gravel, it looks good and is relatively easy to clean (bit time consuming though) and should pose no problems for the snakes as long as they dont eat it.
since the coastal dosn't need very high humidity the idea of providing a separate hide for the jungle with damp sphagnum moss seems good.
