Hi
I have my first Jungle Python and have noticed people selling Jugles under differing species such as Palmerston and have seen other names. Could someone give me an idea what is the difference as I thought a Jungle is a Jungle.
I have attached a couple of pics of my Jungle, could you let me know what type it may be if possible.
Thanks

There just locations not a different species. Best bet is to ask the seller what they are. It's just about impossible to give a location on looks alone, no doubt some will try though.

When it comes to snakes (or almost any animal kept in captivity), there are IMO 3 categories. They are as follows: GENERIC: These are your run of the mill, stock standard types. Usually the most common and least expensive as well. If you get your animal without a locale/line name then your animal is just that...a generic animal with no locale or line name. Please note that I think these animals can still be amazing critters and much loved and valued animals. They are very often the first type of snake a new hobbyist might get. LOCALE SPECIFIC: These animals are either wild caught or captive bred from wild caught parents(or grandparents etc) from a specific locality (for example Alice Spring Childrens, Palmerston jungles, or georgetown stimmies). These animals are generally bred with animals from the same locale which share similar traits to preserve the "look" of the wild animals in that locality. LINE BRED: These animals are your various mutations/morphs etc. This category can possibly be broken down into two smaller categories consisting of Breeder lines and morph lines. By morph lines I am refering to animals such as the albinos, hypos and hypers that are emerging in the market. These are often based on the presence of a particular genetic characteristic. I also include locale specific animals which have been bred to exaggerate a particular colour/trait in this category (as opposed to breeding to maintain "wild-type" appearance) but this is a personal thing. Examples of such animals are the High yellows, high whites etc that can be found in many species. finally in this category are the breeder lines. These are lines in which a specific breeder has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of a certain species/morph/trait. Examples are such things as the Southern Cross line of hypo bredlis or the Krauss line of Jungles.
Anyway that is enough rambling from me. As I mentioned earlier these are the categories i fit things into. they are subjective and therefore express an opinion. Some hobbyists feel the need to assign their generic snake to a locale or a line. This isnt really necessary and ends up earning the hobbyist a bad reputation if they end up breeding "inferior" quality animals. Enjoying reptiles is what we are all about. Hopefully this post has helped clarify things a bit for you Davcarb.

Hi all
Thanks for all your input. this has given me a better understanding on the species. I am not too sure how old she is, I think around the 3 year mark. It was given to me by a close friend how is no longer with us and this was his favorite jungle. She has the letter "C" on her head. The yellow is more of a cream colour somthing like custard not high yellow like a Gosford Diamind. Another question, for you great people, how come some seem to have a higher yellow colour than others. Is it like diamonds where they can differ in colour from very high yellow to cream. As you can probably tell my main stock are diamonds.
Thanks for all your help.

Oh forgot to ask !!!!!
What do people recomend (if anything) to improve the colour of pythons, diamonds, jungles, bredli ect. I give my snakes a mixture of cacium and Herpative Multivitamins I place into a capsual once every month or so. I also inject a mouse / rat with mutton bird oil every couple of months. Any other sugestions ?
I also noticed that my jungle does not eat very often, once every few months. From previouse records has done 4 - 5 months without food. Not like my Bredli and Waters who are pigs and eat whenever I give them food.
Thanks again |

Some jungles are just more yellow then others, same with diamonds and just about any other snake some look better then others. Jungles tend to look drab as juvies, peak at around 2 years depending on the line and individual and then start to get a tad drab again. Some will hold their colours better then others.
I'm not sure about the multivitamins, but some people swear by UV light to bring out their colours, wether there is much truth to this I'm not sure. Either way it won't turn an average jungle into a stunning one. (BTW not implying your jungle is average he is very nice)
