Question keeping elapid questions

hey hey looking at getting my advanced licence this year, looking at getting an elapid and green tree python, questions about the elapids, can you buy the anti venom for yourself if holding them as pets? or do u just have to get to a hospital asap?? i kow it sounds stupid but im unsure and wanna get as much info before i contemplate getting them! i was thinking either a red belly black snake or a death adder i know they are two totally diff coz one hasnt killed anyone before (on record) and the other one is on the top few most deadliest but yeah...

if anyone could help that wuld be awesome!!

antivenom is a schedule 4 drug so no you can't buy it or administer it yourself. To keep some on stand by just incase isn't really an option. It costs a fortune, it has a limited shelf life. Even if you are bitten it's not a simple as getting a shot in the arm and heading home from the hospital. The anti venom itself can cause complications, sometimes as bad as the venom if you have an allergic reaction to it.

Splitmore's got it in one.

Also remember what I often call "exotic" species for the state of Victoria, like death adders. There are only so many hospitals that stock antivenin for them - the city does, but that's because they are close to Melb Zoo. You'd be best to stick with local species or ones that respond well to tiger snake antivenin IMHO. You're doing the right thing getting a feel for it. No point pretending a bite will never occur

im also from werribee and will be possibly getting elapids in the near future. and there should be a hospital that keep antivenom for the zoo and ballarat hospital may keep it due to the wildlife park.but really its just a matter of doing a course in handling and knowing what you are doing

Just going on trouser_snake's logic if you cant handle a reptile then there's no point keeping it. Alot of people seem to think their animals need to be handled. While most will simply tolerate it I'm sure they would be just fine without it.

Label me what you will but one of my tigers craves contact and likes nothing more than a gentle rub under the chin resulting in what I would best describe as a sort of a purr

Step 1: Do a first aid course
Step 2: Have a adequately stocked first aid kit
Step 3: After step one you should KNOW HOW TO USE IT

Antivenom is usually available from Melb. hospitals (even for interstate species) which can be air lifted (at your expense) to your hospital. If the antivenom needs to come from inerstate costs are in excess of $10,000. I mention this because I know someone in Vic. who received a bill for $15,000 for death adder antivenom to be flown from Sydney. Do you really have the bottle?

Mackah just a sugestion, if you plan on getting a ven or vens.... get incontact with your local hospital let them know what species you have and if and I hope not but if you do get tagged %100 identification is the best 1st aid so when making that dreaded call be direct and precise when you have been bitten use the correct 1st aid procedure and its pot luck in the end cause no one knows if the anti -ven is gonna be worse then the bite untill it happens but if you practise the above 1st your chances are better for you ...I have asked similar questions and the same answers know 1st aid ,know your species and be clear and precise other then that pick a 4 leaf clover leaf lol
