Hi all
One of my childrens has recently started eating again after a winter cooling period. However he is now a very reluctant eater and will only take his mouse when it is lying on the floor. He takes a long time to show any interest and when he does take it, it is more of a yawn around the mouse. He doesnt coil at all even once he has grasped the mouse.
If I wiggle the mouse he wont take it. This is all from a very voracious feeder in the past, who when first I got him was told he would only take live prey so this behaviour is unusual for him. He has been eating thawed mice for many years so thats not the problem and he has had several feeds now since cooling so its not a once off. Also his cage mate is eating just fine so I dont think its an envronment issue.
Any ideas of how I can get his feeding response fired up again??

I'm having the same sort of problem with my coastal. i've had her for 3 years and has always been a big eater, but she just won't even touch the mice i put in for her. as soon as the rats we are breeding get a little larger i will try her on one of those, but for the meantime i have no idea why she will not eat. i hope it's just because it is still fairly cold

i am experiencing exact same problem with my DP. She will not take food from my hand. Rats don't get touched at all but i have left a mouse in her cage to find it gone the next morning.
I've been told it is quite normal for one just coming out of hybernation. At the course I did they said regardless of your heating, if its cold outside they know it and it will effect their appetite.
You mentioned when you first got it it would only take live, even though its been eating thawed food for long enough now. A suggest I could offer is offer him a freshly killed mouse. I know it sounds awful but knock a mouse and offer it to him while its nerves are still kicking. Being warm and look like its alive, it might get him going.

| Thanks mysnakesua, I thought about doing that however it may be more trouble then its worth as he is currently eating (just mind you). Not sure if its worth the risk as I don't want him to develop a taste for freshly killed or still kicking and then have to try and get him back on to thawed at a later date.

Ok that's a point. But I guess, the most important thing is, he is taking it, even if it isn't his usual character. So long as he is otherwise healthy, then keep on feeding him like that. I have a feeling my DP will NEVER eat out of my hand. She will not even look at a mouse until all lights out and no-one is watching. And Rats? Well Mr Pythoninfinite has kindly offered his assistance to try and get her eating as she should be eating medium rats.
But if she never does, i guess I'll have to keep on mice but i am not sure whether to feed her for 3 days in a row to give her a proper feed or what because she may never adapt to taking them while we're watching so I won't be able to just give her one after the other. Ah well, only time will tell but whatever works for her is good enough for me.
Kathy
