I'd say that overfeeding for anylength of time will reduce lifespan. This is due to increaseing the rate of cell division and growth of the animal. So the snake may live for one year less (maybe no noticable change in lifespan) but it is larger and will possibly breed a year sooner as well. It depends on the species of course, If the animal is kept as a pet only there is no need to go crazy with feeding.

It seems to me that younger snakes will take care of varying their own diet just by going into shed. I try to feed most of my snakes a 10%-sized item about 1 time a week. But with younger snakes going into shed around 1 time a month, they usually end up going a couple of weeks without feeding, anyway.
Just a quick observation from a herp noob.

I dont put a rigid schedule on feeding, I tend to wait until the snake is hunting, then give it a feed. the average seems to be around 3-4 weeks. They seem quite happy like that.
