I have always been passionate about topics like this so let it rip...Ok, here's somehting different. My sister lives right next door to me and has seen and held many of my animals ok.......So here it is...after all my lecturing she proceeded to tell me that her husband killed a yellow belly black snake cause it was under the house and she was scared it would bite her son!
I have tried to drum it into their heads that if you leave the snake alone it wil leave you alone! She still thinks a python can make you sick even though i have over 30 of em and have let my nephew handle a few, many times in front of her(the ones that don't bite)....She still thinks a python can breed with say a death adder in the wild because some goose told her.I have told her many times this is impossible and is like a human breeding with a horse etc...
What more can i do than try to educate these ppl as much as i can?
BTW,i didn't hear about this till after the incident as often the case. Also i have only seen rbbs not yellow bellies but they assured me the belly was bright yellow.Does anyone know of this morph being in Nth Qld?
Cheers,
Browns...........

Yes I have heard of the Yellow Bellied Black Snake morpth in northern Queensland. We even hear about them hear in NSW.
We in the Herp game call them by a different name. That being the Common Tree Snake. Townsville, which is only a few hours from you is famous for Black Tree Snakes with bright yellow bellies.

Yeah well i could've told you there's little hope for my sister but i'll keep on keeping on...
I have asked them about colouration and they swear it was as black as the ace of spades...We get all morphs of gts here but i have never seen a black gts with yellow belly which doesn't mean they aren't here.......

If you have Eric Worrels Australian Reptiles Book you will see a picture there of a typical Jet Black Common Tree from the Townsville area. As you are not to far from there, you could safely bet thats what they killed.

I've told my brotherinlaw that if he can get close enough to kill one he can put a broom etc there to place it out of harms way..we'll see what happens with the next one.He has rushed over a few times with small red napes so maybe it is size that freaks em out......

If I could respond to this topic with a quote?
"The snake is an animal...It has a backbone and heart. It has red blood and drinks water & eats food. It breathes air and feels fear, just like every other animal in the world...And it's in a body that is the hardest thing for the average person to understand." - David G. Barker, VPI Ranch

Well said kevyn and as for the "yellow bellied black snake" it annoys me as much as people who cut the head of a "snake" before realising it has a blue tongue and stumpy legs(although not even venemous snakes should be prosecuted).

People who hate snakes are most of the time ignorant not very intelligent people. They are not willing to learn. I bet that they vote for one politic party all they live with out checking the policy or how much benefit that party will bring to our country. Most of the time is waste of the time to talk to them about reptiles.
They are different people who we should try to educate, people who are afraid of snakes because they do not know much about them. There is a lot of people like this around and I am always happy to talk to them.
What great reward to see them to handle snake for first time. Only think they needed was opportunity to learn little and fear was gone.

Tie the dead snake around her neck and make her wear it till it drops off. If it happens again repeat the process. She'll soon take a very strong aversion to killing reptiles.
Im pretty sure that you are allowed to do this. Even if there isnt a law allowing it Im sure that you could get a majority of people on this and other herp lists to support you.

From what you were saying in your post you cant do much else mate. once people have their heads to far up their own bums, they become ignorant and once they have an opinion there is no hope in changing it... I quite like Peter's suggestion tho, if not only for a bit of fun |

maybe you need to remind them of the penalty for killing wildlife that is not in direct threat of harm?

Sounds a little harsh there Slatey. In fairness to the ignorant for hundreds of years peoples thought processes have been imbedded with 'snake bad...must kill'. There is always stuff around promoting bad publicity about snakes. Even movies showing snakes being used for murder weapons don't help the cause. Another bad example is here in Qld the local power mob Energex have their yearly storm warning regarding downed power lines and telling us not to go near them. The add shows a power line swinging in the storm turn into a 'killer snake'. None of this helps with the 'ignorant' peoples views on snakes. JMO......
