light covers

just read the unfortunate story on poor sandy getting caught in the light cover and thought i would post some photos of my setup to show a cheap alternitive to the mesh covers.i have used this setup for a long time with no dramas.i use a $4 clear plastic screw top container from woolies ,drill a few breather holes in it so the container doesnt get too hot and mount the light fitting in it.when the bulb blows ,just unscrew the container and fit another bulb.you'll notice i use a fluro bulb as the light scorce and the heat light is under the basking pad that the snakes love.gives them the option to gat warmth from above or below.and ,no, the plastic doesnt melt.hope this helps.cheers

RE: light covers

What is the wattage of the lights? Must not be very high.
Good idea though.

RE: light covers

The red bulbs are 40 watts and the others are just little fluros (so 10-15 watts). Keep in mind that we're in Queensland and don't need higher wattage bulbs to keep the enclosures warm.

with the 40 watt bulbs the plastic is warm to touch and heaps higher wattage bulbs can be used.the brand of them is "prestige"and on the bottom of it is says" microwave safe 100 degrees celcius" so there is no problem with heat.

That's an interesting idea. I'm loving all the ingenious ideas herp owners have for the various challenges of this hobby/addiction.

I would be supplying some UV for a Diamond python which may cause problems for your light cages.

1) if you did use a compact flouresent UV source in your light cages the plastic would probably filter most of it out.

2) The UV would probably break down the plastic pretty quickly.

Metal light cages would not suffer from these issues.

To stop small snakes getting into the wire cages I found that a stocking stretched over the cage works well until grow sufficiently until this is not a problem.

Absoloutly briliant idea,,,, i wish i had see that about 2 years ago. would have saved my first baby from death. the uv will get through fine, and it would stop all the hassles you have with cages.
Totally briliant.
