Hey Guys,
What light fittings do you use when building enclosures?
For the normal 40 watt blue globes, would you still use ceramic fittings or are the plastic light fittings from bunnings ok?
I have an enclosure 4ft lont by 2 foot high by 2foot wide.
This has been split into 3 equal size enclosures.
They will each be wired with a thermostat and have a decent sized vent in each.
I am wondering what everyone else uses and if I can get away with normal light fittings.
I will of course have light cages over each - they will be housing Coastal x Diamonds
Thanks
Matt

I have a fluro in mine, I think that's much easier as they come with a cover so you don't need a cage etc..

Thanks Benson, may be a while before I can get out there.....
Just a general question -
If using the blue 40 watt globes..... Can you get away with using the normal plastic light fittings and do you need light cages?
Thanks
Matt

i would definately have something there, ideally a cage, so the snake can't get on to the bulb and get burnt. The bulb will get pretty hot!!!
Not sure if you need a ceramic fitting or not. i use a ceramic but maybe someone else could shed some light on that issue.

You can get away with plastic battens but bare in mind that it does become brittle with in 12 months becoming a safety issue so they will need to be replaced regulalry. I would suggest ceramic as it is a lot more durable. And definately use a cage for the lights/heat source.

Definately need a cage...snakes will wrap themselves around a globe (as it's the warmest place) and are slow to react to burns so will get some nasty burns and scars...which are slow to heal due to metabolism etc...
If a ceramic fitting sells for $5 I wouldn't waste my time with plastic fittings that will need regular replacement...for $15 you can set it up and not worry about the fittings again...

I know the ceramic fittings get real hot....
Will this burn the wood you attach them too though?
Can you use the flanged (ones this look like they screw into the top of the enclosure) with no worries in the fire

The fittings from Bunnigs work fine with normal light bulbs. 60W frosted globes work well, but would still use a light cage as a precaution. I have a number of ceramic fitting crewed to the top of enclosures (melamine) and hasn't burn't it after approx. 2 years.
