Have just bought a new enclosure and want to know what would be the best or required lighting /heating for my 18 month old Diamond. I am new at this as it is my first snake and would appreciate any advice in general as well. Regards. Keithy.

Well, you need sufficient heating to provide a warm spot (about 30*c) and a cool spot (low 20's), preferably with a hide in each area...Monitor your temps and your animals behaviouor, this will give you an indication of what he prefers and you can adjust the temps accordingly...
I would recommend using a timer for a day / night cycle (use UV bulbs for the day cycle - I use a halogen heat bulb for both heating and UV (they're cheaper than the UV bulbs, too)...Its also a good idea to keep the heating on a thermostat controlled switch (saves power and stops your animals from cooking when the weather heats up)...
Keep your water bowl in a cooler part of the enclosure (you dont want it evaporating too quickly)...Oh and make sure the bowl is big enough for him to get into, yet shallow enough so that he can easily get out (you dont want him drowning on you)...
Post some pics, too... |

Diamonds require a gradient heat from 26c at top to 18c at bottom. There are lots of different opinions about this, but at the Husbandry Course I did we were told floor heating isn't necessary or should be very low heat if needed, but they should have a light from above, and that UV is necessary for the diamonds. But then others will tell you differently. Its all just a matter of experience and what area your diamond is from. Mimick their natural conditions and you should do well.

Hello Keithy, I recommend that if you are going to keep diamonds that you get yourself a copy of vol 15 issue 2 and 3 of Monitor Magazine as it has an excellent article by Russel Grant on diamond python husbandry. Go here to check it out http://vhs.com.au/pages/Monback.html

Thanks for the advice everyone who replied, I will get that copy of moniter mag, thanks for that too Mr Black. So basically I need just the one light for UV & heating . The halogen sounds the go then. I already have a themostat control but I will get a timer as well, that sounds like a good idea.I gather it is also necessary to have the light protected by a protector/cover so she(meetpy) won't get burnt . | | |
