Depends on your state's rules, but yeah pretty much Illegal unless absolutly necisarry to get your snake eating etc. It's because in the wild if a snake was to go for a rat, the rat would have a good chance of escape, were as in a enclosure the rat has no chance and is pretty much sent to his fate. If however you have a snake that no matter what you've tried won't eat and live is your only option than you can. There is snakes though that just wont' eat anything other than live.

I dont think this is the case at all. The main reason you wouldnt do it is because the rat will bite your snake back causing some serious injury. People just wouldnt risk it.

Good way to start a post on live feeding, much easier then a flame suit

I think it may be illegal in NSW but not entirely sure. Seems to depend on who you speak to.

It is illegal to purposefully kill any vertebrate in a 'not proper fashion'. ie feeding to a snake. I even heard a radio program that said if you want to kill a cane toad you need to take it to the vet to be put down.

The law may have changed, but when I got my first snake he would not eat for 3.5 months. I then sent an email to NSW NPWS and asked them if it was illegal to feed my snake a live pinkie as it would not take dead. They told me that it was not illegal, and it was the RSPCA that wanted to put an end to it.

its all about kittens. Nothing satisfies the soul more than to toss a live kitten to your snake. I imagine the extatic feeling one receives is comparible to that felt after drinking a child's soul
