ok. well dont panic too much. hissing is normal. and i have a big adult carpet who puffs up if he is reallly reallly really grumpy... also, its winter, and its very normal for a snake to go off its food. some of mine havnt eaten in 2 months

I doubt it would be an actual mouth infection (i.e. mouth rot). Some snakes emit loud bursts of air sporadically when being handled. However it could be the onstart of a respiratory infection. Does it sound like a wet hiss or a dry hiss?
I would keep the animal a bit warmer for a week or two and see if there's any improvement. If not, then i guess a visit to an experienced herp vet is in order.
Also, in the early stages of a R.I. some snakes will continue feeding.

Depends on the vet.

Seriously, it depends on how much you like your pet doesn't it? People can spend hundreds on buying the animal and enclosure but your worried about a few bob to fix a "possible" problem you may have caused yourself?
Which suburb do you live in? If your in Sydney there is Terri Bellamy at Austral who is extremely reasonable in price, Joe at Heathcote is even better in price but not as experienced as Terri, Robert Johnson at Penrith and David Vella at Crows Nest.
If your really that concerned for your animal then get it to the vet,
Simone.

when i took my Bredli to David Vela in crows nest (For the exact same thing, all news was good though) he charged me about $80 But i think that included worming stuff aswell. Ne ways around the 80 mark. I suggest keeping the snake warm and looking out for other signs of RI. Breathing sounds dont always mean RI.

Some vets do a payment plan so if money is tight, you can pay later.

| Why don't you ring up a few reptile vets and ask them their price structure for a consultation and tell them the symptoms of your snake? That way you will be better informed of the condition of your animal and how much it will cost for the vet.
I'm not sure of your age, but know for younger keepers that may not work this cost can be expensive, and hard to come up with, but it is part and parcel of having a living creature in your care. If the cost is prohibitive, I'd even suggest asking the vet if you could pay it off or even do some work around the vet surgery to help meet the cost involved. I'm sure that there would be a vet that would help you out in these circumstances if you show a willingness to pay the bill off through some work around the surgery.
