I think the vet may give you a course of vitamins for it as apparently Betadine doesn't do that much.
Sorry, never had the problem just read a little about it.
Good luck!!

Yes the betadine goes inside the mouth (i prefer diluted listerine). Apply it with a cotton tip and go in the direction of the teeth. If you go against the teeth the cotton will get snagged and tear up. It's also a good idea to use a syringe to squirt the betadine at the sores with slight force so it penetrates into the sores.
Apply it daily with generous amounts over the sores. I personally wouldnt have it on 24hr heat. I would still be turning heat off overnight as cool nights wont really have a negative affect on the healing as long as day temps rise back up to 28-29'c.
Just continue keeping the sores clean by swabbing and everything should be okay. Mouth infections do have a habit of returning if treatment ceases too early so keep an eye on it.

I would not be using betadine, As it actually slows down healing. Use undiuted Hydrogen Peroxide, First clean out the crusty stuff and excess saliva and wash out the mouth with the peroxide using an ear bud. And make sure none goes down the throat and especially the wind pipe. Do this daily for 2 weeks, If it is not gone by then or gets worse I would take it to the vet.

Don't muck around with it yourself - take it to a herp-savvy vet as soon as possible. It is likely that it will need antibiotic therapy, so keep it warm and seek professional advice as soon as you can. The longer you delay the worse the problem will become. Chlorhexidine (at the recommended dilution) would very likely be the antiseptic of choice. As these mouth infections are often associated with respiratory infections, so your vet may want to do a swab and see what the actual bug is that's causing the problem, and may suggest injections with an antibiotic such as Baytril together with irrigation with Chlorhexidine. This is usually very successful.
Neither of these medications is expensive, so it won't break the bank. If the vet decides to send a swab for a pathology report, this may cost a bit more, but should still be less than $100, and it may not be necessary anyway.
Oral infections can damage the bone and cause the animal to lose teeth, and will cause death in severe untreated cases. Prompt professional advice will save you (and the snake) a lot of grief.

I just noticed another post suggesting reduced or no heat at night. This is poor advice for a snake with an infection. Keep the animal in a warm environment (28-30C) day and night - if you let it cool and suffer through heating/cooling cycles, it will compromise the immune system, which functions much better at elevated temps. Higher temps also increase the circulation, so medications and the snake's own repair system will work far more effectively. This especially so if the animal has the beginnings of a respiratory disorder.

I would also stick with the 24/7 heat, but i would suggest that even for snakes that arnt sick.
Definately a time to see the vet IMO.

One contains grog the other contains iodine. Might be all good if you can convince the animal not to swallow

In my line of work the only acceptable form of wound irrigation (for humans) is sterile saline solution. This is due to the fact that alcohol based solutions, chlorhexidine, and hydrogen peroxide can bq (but not always will be) cytotoxic and could destroy normal good bacteria deployed by the body to fight infection and could slow down the healing process.
Do you think this would apply to reptiles? Pythons in particular? Wouldn't pythons have the same physiological responce to injury as humans?
Sorry I'm brand new to reptiles and haven't reasearched the topic myself.

heat 24/7 with cool area provided as well, betadine works much better if slightly diluted in water, as has been said use peroxide to clean the wound and apply the diluted betadine after, if its really bad take it to a good herp vet if its not too bad this will fix it in a mater of 1-2 weeks.
