Exclamation Move from QLD to TAS

Hi
Have a friend here in QLD with a Jungle Python and a Childrens Python.
They are contemplating moving interstate to Tasmania.

Does anyone know of any special regulatory requirements they need to fullfil ?

eg. State permits, quarantine, anything they need to know prior to moving.

Don't know what is needed so any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Nope. From what I'm aware it still stands that no species are allowed to be imported into Tasmania, only the native species in Tasmania are allowed.

I heard some talk that they were thinking about allowing certain species in, but only childrens pythons. I could be wrong though and that wasn't set in stone.

Your friend will have to call up parks and wild life in Tasmania to find out for sure.

Imports are limited. At this stage I have exported only to a few demonstrators and then it is restricted to males only of species that are endemic to areas above the Tropic of Capricorn and must have vigorous veterinary certification. It is probably not feasible to export as pets.

Tassie

Tassie Parks and Wildlife Service have referred me to the Department of Primary Industries

http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf...IL-5366L4?open

and according to them ...as quoted below :-

Under the Animal Health Act 1995 all imports of animals, disease agents, and restricted materials must be authorised by either a special or general authority.

If there is no authority on this ( web ) site, the animal, disease agent or restricted material may not be imported.

This requirement covers all animals, and an 'animal' is defined as any member of the animal kingdom except humans. Eggs, semen, carcasses, and parts of carcasses are included in this definition. A disease agent is any organism capable of causing disease in an animal.

General Authorities are published in the Government Gazette. They apply to all animals and restricted materials of the class specified in the Authority. A General Authority lasts until it is revoked.

Special Authorities are issued by the Chief Veterinary Officer after the importer has applied in writing for an Authority. Special Authorities can apply to particular animals or restricted materials, or to a specified class of animals or restricted materials. An application fee will be charged.

If any import conditions are specified by a General or Special Authority, the animals and their certification must be presented for inspection on arrival in Tasmania. A fee will be charged for this inspection.
End of quote.

So from searching the web site, pythons and snakes were not listed so it appears that unfortunately pythons and snakes are NOT included in either the General Authorities or the Special Authorities. It definately seems that they may not be imported.

Is that just for normal animals or does it include reptiles?

When I lived there from 2000 to 2004, and wanted to get into reptiles I rang up the national parks and wild life and asked them about getting a snake sent over from the "mainland" and they said it wasn't allowed etc.

Things might of changed since then, but I'm not sure.. I think you'd have to research it more - However I'm still sure that you're not allowed to.

tassie

Hi Chris 89.
Just got the info today and also checked out the web page they referred to.

They have a list of General Authorities and Special Authorities and if the type of animal you wish to import is NOT listed then it is NOT permitted.

Pythons & Snakes are definately not listed.

Incidentaly, an animal, by there definition, covers everything, other than humans.

Latest Update - Got this today [07-03-08] via email

Hi Vik
Snakes are a prohibited import into Tasmania. Trust you can find a good home for them on the Mainland.
