Gender: | | | Well as some of you know I have recently acquired a pair of golden tree snakes...I've been waiting a long time for them so very content to finally have them home! I fed them for the first time tonight and it was amazing to watch to say the least They are kept in a 4ft tall 3ft wide 2.6ft deep melamine enclosure, plenty of vines, hides and hollow branches. They are being fed on 3 goldfish each once a week (previous owners advice)...at first I was keen to get their diet more varied but have since been told it is not necessary and quite difficult to do. I am wondering what sort of fish I can use that is readily available at shops? (apart from goldfish) Akasha and "no name" are fascinating to watch and are very fast and alert. They were supposedly "very tame" previously, even eating fish directly from the owners hands....the female is quite easy to handle the male sprays and puffs up although it doesn't really matter they are more of a display pet now. If anyone has any tips/info on housing, care and health of these guys...You can never know too much Enjoy the pics, cheers...

Dont know much about them , i would assume being an arboreal snake they would naturally eat large insects(praying mantis, stick insects)and tree climbing lizards. I wonder if they would have a crack at small birds or even nesting birds. |

Stunning snakes! I am a huge fan of these tree snakes no matter what colour they are, and those golds are awesome! You may want to check out addicted2fishforums, its a melbourne based fish forum where you may be able to get onto feeder fish cheaper than the stores. Anything to save a bit of money these days is worth it IMO.

so is it only the tree snake that'll eat the goldfish?
that looks like a neat way to get some water into them, do you reckon this will work with my coastal carpet? is it safe for coastals to eat fish? (i'd think yes)
cheers, Daniel.

Tree snakes will not eat insects. With persistence they are fairly easy to get onto rodents. They are easier to wean onto pinky rats rather than mice and you have to make sure they are completely free of hair. The way i do it is feed them fish until they will eagerly take them from forceps. Once they are taking fish from forceps, wash a pinky rat and then rub a goldfish all over it and offer to snake with forceps. If rubbing a fish on the rat pinky does not work then i pulverize a fish (mash with a fork) until a paste and then smear all over the pinky. By slowly using less and less fish paste you will eventually get your snake to accept plain rats.
