My Spotted Python is very Bitey!

Howdy

OK, i have a big problem. My spotted is about 15 months old and around 50cm's in length at the moment. I am very gentle with him. I try to pick him up as gentle as i can. I move slowly and make no sudden moves around him. Iv'e even done the right thing and supplied him with his own mansion of a snake enclosure. But he seems to always want to snap and bite at me and everyone else he comes in contact with. Sometimes if he comes in contact with one of my fingers or whatever he will jump back and start getting defensive. I find it hard to get him out of his cage without him biting me. Whenever he comes in contact with a new person it seems like he just wants to attack them. All up i'd say he bites me about 30 - 40 times a aweek. i should also add that i take him out and handle him ever so gently for between 30 minutes - 1 hour every day. I feed him on time. He's always got water and correct heat. My Problem is that its not to bad that he wants to bite me now because i can hardly feel it. But when he gets to be full size i might have a problem if he wants to keep biting everyone. I really wouldnt like to have 60 - 80 holes in my hands and arms every week. I dont know what to do and i am just really hopeing that he stops this madness soon because i want to enjoy his company. Dont get me wrong, when he's not biting he is a happy chappy and wants to explore around and crawl around my arms and hands and i even let him slither through the grass in the backyard and climb the tree outside. When he's not biting i love him to bits but it just seems like everything has to be his way or the highway. Has anyone got any suggestions or advice that i might be able to do? I would really like to have a placid snake that never wants to bite. Please help me!

handling any snake for 30 mins to an hour each day seems quite a bit much to me...id try leaving him for a few days- a week, n then handle him for a short amount of time every couple of days afta that to let him get used to u...i always wash my hands with the same antibacterial handwash every time before i handle my snakes, i figure they will get used to the smell n shud make them feel a lil more comfortable...mayb use a hook to get him out of his cage n then handle once he is out....well gud luck wit him hope he becomes a well behaved lil snakey

How long have you had it, some snakes take longer to setle down than others.
Ive got one that still hasnt settled down after 10 months. Yet after only a week, another one of mine would come to the glass when I walked in the room. wait for me to slide it open and just slither up my arm (has never bitten).
Also how big is the enclosure, you dont want anything more than 2 foot for a 50cm spotted. Other wise it could be stressed by the space.

U say you've got him in a mansion? How big exactly is this mansion? Some snakes benefit being in smaller enclosure or clik clak rather than a large one straight away, he could be thinking it is too larger area for it to defend. All snakes are different. Good luck.

cage size could be a very big deal with it.. maybe make the cage smaller for a while and see if he calms down.. mine was also snappy but has calmed down now..

Hi,

mine didn´t settle down for the first 18 month, so I started to use a hook to get him out the enclosure. This worked to let him stay placid. Bye the way, I only get him out if it is necessary.

Cheers Carsten

firstly cut down on handling, snakes are not social animals, they get nothing out of handling and in cases like this it stresses them. How big is the "mansion"? It may not feel secure in a huge enclosure

yep, my spotted (similar age) gets very bitey for no reason, some days she is placed, the next the devil is inside her. I just take it as it comes, although i do get jack of the bitey issue. I expect to be bitten everytime i go to handle her. On the other hand, I have a stimme which is the exact opposite, placid as anything.
