If they see something as a perceived threat, they will respond quickly.
I was told to never get a Water Python, that yes, they are the spawn of satan. Of course, after hearing that, I had to go out and get my first. She was scared and snappy but after a month or so of gentle handling, she had changed to one of the quietest snakes I own.
I now have 4 Waters, 3 of which were alert and defensive in the beginning and all of which are wonderful and relaxed now.
They can be cage defensive though and are certainly stomach driven !!
Love them

Yeah- I don't understand the reputation they have, either.
The pair I have have NEVER, not ONCE been snappy defensive. They've been a little flighty, but that's about it.
They are very fast snakes, and very alert- very similar to my olive, except my olive is always wanting to go up, and the waters always wanting to go down.
Of all the snakes I own (15), the pair of waters I have have the most insane feeding response- they go absolutely berzerk! That says a lot, considering I own a couple different species of kingsnakes, pine snakes and pythons!

Once I got my babies past the fear that the world was out to get them, I found they became very clingy. It's as if they were saying (and I know I am anthromor-whatseethatword here)...
"OK, you tell me the world isn't going to hurt me, and I trust you to make sure it doesn't happen, therefore, I shall stick with you, closely, and you shall keep the bad greeblies away".
Or is that just mine ?
