Nature wins .

2 mths ago l posted that l would let my Darwin hatch her own eggs . Great success , hatched 11 cuties over 18 - 21 of Dec . One held out a bit . Mum took a small rat or three while on the eggs so she didnt lose condition . One of the hatchies [ now known as killer ] bit me and my daughter , and drew blood , in the first 24 hrs and ate on day 2 . Will post pics soon , Kids have downloaded so much animae that l cant upload pics till next billing cycle .

I'm interested in the comparable success rates of natural incubation vs artificial. Any experience anyone?

thats a good question i don't think many people let them do it and artificial incubate the eggs i think artificial incubation would give a better hatch rate because you have nearly 100% control over temps and humidity thats not to say its better after all thats how they do it in the wild

My first time breeding but she had 3 slugs , 12 good eggs of which she pushed one away . l tied to incubate that one but it failed , cut it open to find half formed dead snake .

Very new to the whole thing here, and just expanding my field of knowledge (breeding snakes is waaaaaay down the track for me!) Is there a culture of "stud animals" in herpetology? (NO! I don't mean all you macho male snake owners - I mean stud snakes...) ie if I had a female and was looking to breed but I didn't want to keep a pair, could I ask around for a male to mate with my female?

l slowly turned up the temp till she stopped shivering , the gauge in with her read 30 . She is a special girl and would eat under water , l just offered her a smalll rat while she was on the eggs and she took it .

lf you go to an old thread called Darwin Wrestling Match there are pics of both parents . The mum is classic Darwin but the Dad is a bright golden colour . Too early to tell with the bubs , at the moment they all look like little Womas with wide heads , red and tan with dark red stripes . Pity that wont last .
