Some nice adders people, and yes, I heard from a reliable source that they are the fastest striking snake and they can strike up to 4 times in a second. Apparently at feeding time, if you blink at the wrong time you miss it!

The Barkly Death Adder has been claimed by some to be the fastest striker, I don't think people have measured enough snakes properly to make any claims about which snake is fastest. I'd be surprised if a Mamba could strike faster than an adder (Black Mambas have been claimed to cover distance faster than any other snake, I can't say I've ever measured them, but they'd certainly beat an adder ).
My Barkies certainly can strike quickly, literally faster than my eyes can see - you don't even have to blink to miss it, one moment the snake is sitting there, the next it is stretched across the tub and latched onto the rat, sometimes you can't see anything at all in between. I don't know if they're actually the fastest type of adder or if people have just assumed that because they're the largest and most powerful. The rumours about Barkies having superophidian abilities come from an attempt at measuring their strike speed with high speed film (the snakes were too fast and couldn't be measured). I think this was mentioned in the big paper on Barkly Adders written by Brian Barnett and Graeme Gow in the early 90's.

i read the same thing somewhere about the high speed camera not being able to capture it, but to me it didnt make sense, if a high speed camera can catch footage of a bullet flying, i am sure they would easily be able to take it of a striking snake no matter how fast it is!!! just my thoughts anyway.
and Rexs1 do you still have any albinos??

and Rexs1 do you still have any albinos?? | I had the same thoughts when I heard the story. Bullets generally fly at supersonic speed, if a camera can catch them and the adder strikes faster, the adder's head is actually moving at supersonic speed, which of course it isn't (If it was, you'd get a sonic boom every time an adder struck!). Perhaps the cameras can catch the bullets because they travel over a greater distance, eg, the bullet moves one metre per frame and as long as you get two or more frames in, you can measure the speed of the bullet, but the camera wasn't fast enough to get enough frames of footage to show the snake extending and retracting. You'd think more than 15 years later they'd have the technology to comfortably measure the strike speed, but I'm not sure if anyone has bothered.
