Guys/Gals, I am really confused. I am building a new vivarium, BUT, firstly, before I get too involved into it, (it hasn't been officially started yet, just gathering the materials bit by bit), I don't know what reptile to buy. I purchased my first snake in June this year - a juv Diamond. I love so many different snakes and lizards, I don't know what I should buy next. I think I will let this forum decide for me. I hope you all can give me some honest answers on what you think should be the next addition to my house should be. Lizard or snake , snake or lizard. |

Hi there neighbour, (well, almost), I think that this is a decision that only you can make. Have a long hard look at what species of both you are interested in and would like to keep, then research the needs of all of these and decide which ones fit in with your ability to provide those needs the best. This will provide you with a shortlist of species most suited to your circumstances and from there you can go on which one you would prefer in the way of looks, temperament etc. Sorry I didn't just say "Snake" or "Lizard" but I really do believe that you have to research and decide which yourself.
Good luck with a hard decision and happy herping.

I love bearded dragons so they are high on my list. Also, coastals, jungles, olives, I don't know. I want them all but can only do one at a time. I research everything all the time.

I probably will get 50 different suggestions, but I hope that some people may be able to give me information on how they find their snakes and what their recommendations would be. At the end of the day, I want everything, but that is not possible (yet).

Afrofishy is right Diamond, your decision in the end, think in terms of housing feeding etc. Any python is fantastic imo, each individual is diff in terms of handling disposition, i guess its down to looks and future size/feeding considerations.
As for lizards, I suppose the same applies, Beardies are generally really placid.
Turtles are great too, again research needs first.
Sorry I cant decide for you really, good luck, happy herping.

That is exactly what I was thinking also. Could they be housed together. Mine is approx 10 months old, 2 ft long. Not yet sexed. What would be the procedure from here????

If it's only an Idea of different species that you are after and as you live just up the road from me then I could be persuaded to have you over to handle some of mine and see what you think from there.
I must say though that your love of beardies is well founded as they really are great little characters |

Getting your diamond sexed then making up a pair, would be my move.. I dont know why but I feel better knowing they have a mate in the next cage, even though I know they're not social animals
However, if you're looking into lizards, then IMO, beardies are the way to go. i've kept a couple dozen diff. spp. of lizards, and these guys are just fantastic!! soo much character, and still so great to handle. SUCH a pleasure to keep
