Generally they'll grow anywhere from 6 to 8ft. Hatchlings are reddish brown in colour and quite dull but will change rapidly over the first 12months. Generally they are considered the most banded of all the carpets. The colouring varies quite a bit through this species I've found, so it's best if possible to see some of the previous hatchling results. Temps are typical to the Far Northern parts of the country with occasional misting for humidity.
Typical young carpet behaviour IMO Personally I think they are gorgeous!
The photos are a little old but you can see the change he has gone through. I've had mine since he hatched and is also perfectly fine around the kids |

Is Morelia spilota variegata used as a general name for carpet pythons or is it the actual subspecies name for North Western darwins? Just curious because my variegatas look nothing like yours so now i'm a bit confused |

| Yes it is, post a pic of yours if you want a verdict.

Here you go male & female, sorry about the pics I only just got them last week so they havn't been subjected to the camera yet. I acually bought them as coastals but they came with the sub-species name as variegata on the paperwork which is why i'm curious, I couldn't really care less what they are, I love them to bits |

Forgot to mention female was just about to shed so she looks quite dark, compared to now

I've seen specimens that are more than 9 foot, wild ones can get huge! So I would assume that captive ones could get just as big.

Look like northern Qld coastals to me, but I'm no expert on the subject.

Yeah thats what i'm sure they are , just trying to work out the variegata name, I think it must be a pretty broadly used name for carpet pythons

Morelia spilota variegata is the subspecific name for the Darwin carpet python, which is sometimes referred to as the North-western Carpet python. I just call them the northern carpet python but everyone to their preference. There is a lot more evidence that the nortern/darwin carpet is the form which occurs over the whole of the top-end including Cape York, the Cape York just being a colour variation of the Northern and not a continuation of the coastal from further south but may even be a distinct form of its own.

I was very confused of what to put down with my record book and return forms so i just put carpet python 2969 now. Thats for a jungle, coastal and a darwin.
Hope that helps explain it a bit without confusing you
