NPWS can come to your house? NSW

Hey guys, I heard from a friend that after you apply for a reptile license and receive it and have bought reptiles on it, that NPWS officers can come by your house without warning to see if your reptiles are all declared and legal.

I searched the DECC website for this information but could not find it. Can someone confirm/deny this, or show me a reliable link to further research this?

They can, but you can refuse entry if it is not a convenient time (unless they have a search warrant).

That's interesting, I'm not particularly bothered by it, but I wasn't aware that was a standard practice. I assume they mostly drop by people who own large collections.

its amazing though ,not that i am against it ,but the ironic thing is animal welfare can do a surprise check but when it comes to kids, letters and notification is needed before they can investigate ..even when a whole community witnesses the abuse on the kids......they cleaned up their act ,put clothes on their kids ,and was allowed to have them..2 days later kids are running naked in winter time ,door knocking to neighbours to get food and no welfare in sight....and now they have moved on ,she is pregnant with baby number 5 ....and the cycle keeps going .........

Oh yes, as someone who has worked a little in conjunction with troubled youth I'm all too aware of how frustrating the Family Services system can be. If they can do it for animals, they should be able to do it for children. Still, I almost think it's a little but of overkill to drop in to check on the snakes out of the blue. There must be a reason for them to have found that course of action necessary. Is the licensing system often abused?

Fair enough, but I find it odd to get a license and then acquire illegal reptiles. Why bother with the license if you intend to break the law anyway?

Even though our licences state you must grant NPWS entry at any time they want here in NSW, the NPWS Act states otherwise.

They can enter any property , seperate garage or shed , BUT can not enter your dwelling or any building attached to that dwelling without a search warrent. If they arrive and its not convient for you , you have every right not to allow them into your dwelling or attached buildings. A dwelling is defined on where you live and sleep. Any structure that is not attached to your dwelling can legal be entered, and even torn apart such as a pit or avairy if they wish so.

I don't think when the majority of people first get their licenses
they think of illegal activities or exotics,
except for those rare shifty individuals..
it's a avenue they venture down along the way
Also yes I have been "spot checked"
due to my name being mentioned (false accusations)
in illegal activity.
Mind you the officer gave me a weeks notice,
defeats the purpose IMO

Spot checks are rarely conducted in NSW, and are generally only done (to my knowledge) on people keeping vens (i have also heard of someone being checked before being approved a ven license), and i would presume anyone thought to be breaking the law might be up for a visit also.

The only thing to break the cycle is ... wait for it... compusory sterilisation. There. I said it. I work in a low socio-economic area. Some of these parents should be fairdinkum ...

bigguy, thanks for the information. As I have not yet applied for my license and knew nothing of this based on the DECC site am I correct in assuming the information is provided to us only after we receive our license? So we pay first, then find out we have agreed to those terms? Or have I simpy under researched the issue?

itbites, you're probably right, I doubt anyone originally gets their license with intent of breaking the law. I find it funny that in the case of dropping by the did warn you in advance though, for while I definitely think it's more polite and makes you feel less like you're on some watch list, it also totally defeats the purpose of catching you in the act.

I've had conversations with many of those parents, you leave feeling totally dispirited and drained.
