Olive Feeding Pics

We have just given our olive her second feed since we've had her. She struck again without hesitation. What a great snake.

I have heard both sides of the story with regard to all types of substrate. The breeder we bought the olive from recommended these washed pebbles. I questioned his recommendation and he reinforced his opinion.

I guess we all learn from our own experiences. If we have trouble with it we'll get rid of it.

She spends most of her time up high anyway.

I can't see there being a HUGE problem with the pebbles unless they manage to stick to the food item being swallowed, which is probably not hugely likely but could be remedied by feeding in a seperate enclosure - one problem I see with gravel is that when your snake passes that meal it is likely to go straight through the gravel as it isn't absorbant...

Very nice Olive and these photos of a youngster are helping me convince my missus...keep them coming

She passed a meal last week. She left it in the corner too, What a good girl.

It sat nicely on top and was removed easily.

gravel is fine as a substrate.. but if you want to be safer and not risk loosing the snake, simply take the snake out and feed in a spare tank or tub. nice looking olive too.

The urine is more what I would be concerned with, I am sure the firmer parts would hold well but the more liquid parts would seep straight through...

Out of curiosity, Ambree, how old is she and how long?

Gravel looks nice but unless it's cleaned out and washed fairly regulary can cause problems as the most of the cacky stuff will just got through it and sit. Out of everything I have tried including the gravel the good old news paper, even though not as attractive by any means is the most healthiest for the snakes and easiest to keep clean.

I'm not exactly sure of her hatch date but I think it was November 06. I will chase that up though.

We haven't measured her yet. Still gaining confidence with handling her as she is our first snake, but my best guestimate would be between 800-900mm. She has grown in the 11 days we've had her.

We have two lots of gravel. One will always be clean and on standby. The enclosure is a bit of a feature in the house, so we don't really want newspaper visible.

Would it be a good idea to put newspaper under the pebbles?

there is a very slim chance that gravel could cause probs but marine carpet also looks alot more natural

I can see where you're coming from with the newspaper thing Ambree, it is very effective but looks terrible...

If you are using two lots of gravel substrate then marine carpet might be a good idea as suggested, use it the same way, keep two pieces handy so when one is washed and drying you can replace it...

Also that fake grass you get from bunnings looks great but same thing you will need one in and one spare. If this is your only snake than its very easy to use pretty substrates although once you get a few snakes you'll find yourself leaning towards the news paper, or so I found. Specially my snakes are buggers for waiting until I've cleaned all there enclosure out and made it all lovely then 10min later what do you know, it's dirty again lol. So news paper nice and easy for that but yes I would definetly go for the marine carpet or fake grass rather than the gravel unless you really enjoy a lot of unessairy hard cleaning.
