opmv

ok, i dont know if i'm being paranoid, but i'd rather be safe,...

i met a guys snake last night, and had a litle play with it, it seemed healthy and all that but i know its not obvious if a snake has it.
anyway, i got home, dumped all my clothes in the washing machine, had a shower and washed my hair before i touched Loki.

do i need to disinfect the clothes in the washing machine?
wash above a certain temp?
or will normal cycle be enough?

might just be a bit paranoid lol. But true safer than sorry. Pretty much as a rule just always wash your hands etc thoroughly when handling a new or someone elses snake. Of course if you did handle a snake with OPMV then I would proberbly through my clothes away to be on the safe side. They really still don't know exactly how it's transmited.

Best thing I think maybe read as many articles as you can on OPMV so you really understand as much as u can about the causes etc. It's a bit like menigacocil (sorry for spelling) in humans I guess, in the sense we dont' know enough about it, there's no real cure or preventative (well there is but u know what i mean) and the best you can do is do your best in preventing it that u can. Although if with the best preventions you could still get it. If your really that worried I would suggest maybe not handling other peoples snakes. As a rule if I've been handling someone elses snakes I don't know very well I just don't go near my goes for around 24hours after and make sure I've had a shower, same with any snakes I have in quarantine. The poeple that have to worry about OPMV the worst is large breeders or peolple buying a lot of snakes as theve got a lot to loose if they do get a case of it. Of course in saying that two even a person with one snake dosn't want to become suseptable to it and loose there beloved pet. If the guys had the snake for 3 years and hasn't had any new comers than he's snake wouldn't have it as it usually shows it's face between 3 - 12months from being infected. Hope that helps some what.

I understand its transmitted through fluids?...(such as mites, water bowls, saliva, etc)...

If so, then washing and sterilising appropriate items should prevent the spread?...

You (and everyone else that hasn't) should download and read NPWS' hygiene protocol for snakes.
