OPMV HI Testing

Does anyone know of any labs in Australia doing Hemagglutination Inhibition titrations for OPMV antigens. This seems to be common practice in the US.

Given the fact that 2 of these tests need to be conducted to provide a useful result the cost of sending samples overseas is prohibitive.

From what I understand you can get the test done in the US or UK but not here.

I knew this to be the case just over a year ago, I'm interested to see whether anything has changed. Seem rather stupid to me that there is still no effort to make this available to Australian keepers.

We are a piddling small market compared to the US and it is still yet to be made readily available over there (it is offered only by a few labs). It will be a loooong time before those test will be run in Australia.

It is not the cost of sending samples overseas that is prohibitive, it is the fact that you cannot send over reptile blood samples legally.

Tim Hyndman in WA is conducting research, I am pretty sure he is doing his PHd on it, to be able to develop a test for OPMV. They do have a test they are working on atm, but it is not sensitive and specific enough for a highly conclusive test and more research is needed.

G'day Darren,

I'm not sure whether private keepers are able to send bloods, but when I worked at VS we sent various biological samples to the UK for testing. I am unsure of the permit requirements and legalities of it all, but I'm sure Pete could point you in the right direction. It was fairly costly from memory.

would be great to see these tests become available over here. So much fear in the community surrounding the virus and a conclusive test would put alot of minds to rest.

P.S.Jonno hope you got that money ok, pm me if there were any probs

Hey Jonno,

Yeh, I am sure it would be different for Venom Supplies compared to private keepers. As far as we are concerned you can not send blood samples overseas, I am pretty sure it has something to do with CITES as well.
