Hi all, got a question for ya:
This is a picture from G Krefft's 1869 book 'The Snakes of Australia'.
It shows a 'Diamond Snake'.
But this does not look like the Diamond Pythons I see all over the net.
The Australian museum calls this picture a 'Green Tree Python'. Diamond Snake.jpg
Any ides, did they mix up the subject, was it drawn from a distance (and in a dark forest), or is it just too dificult to draw all of those little spots on typical Diamonds?

It does look like some of the dark diamonds esp when they get really old. Definately would have picked it as a diamond if i saw it with out knowing what it was.

I'd say its a diamond still, you can get some that are like black slugs. Plus I doubt too many GTP's would have been drawn in Aus at that early stage if any.

...and many of the ones you have seen on the net have been selectively bred for brighter and brighter markings. Naturally occuring Diamonds can certainly resemble that picture...

| I know we can laugh at that picture but i still have a lot of respect for these early artists - I know I could not draw that good!
Here is the link to the Aust museum: http://www.museum.vic.gov.au/caughta...red/Women.aspx
It even says Morelia Spilota on the print so I don't know how THEY got it wrong.
I hope to get a copy of the 1984 reprint of this book one day, if I do I will post any other early pictures that seem interesting.

It is obviously an interesting version that we look at and say has many flaws - but we have also looked at Diamonds VERY regularly for a long time. This could very well have been a view for a short time, make a quick sketch, leave and complete it later...
...regardless, I agree with you Cray - might not be accurate but it is a great pic and VERY interesting to see, definately post any others you find. I would LOVE a print of ol pics like that...
