Hi all,
As a freshmen into snake ownership, im wondering how people overcome the general instinctual fear of snakes. Growing up we lived 'out bush' with plenty of poisenous snakes to fear and now getting into actually owning one I still have that reserved caution for them, which i like to call 'respect'.
Im at the point with a hatchling still coming to terms with it being a bit snappy and i would put it down to my nervousness. though im curious how you each overcame that if you ever felt that way to begin with ? i want nothing more then to be 100% comfortable with them and remove the 'mind of matter' thing that they all want to cause damage if that makes sense...
have attached a picture of my little girl, she is wonderful.
thanks alot

Just let it bite you and then it's over and you realise... oh... ok.... well i can deal with that! It's a start i suppose. The more they're handled (don't worry they soon seem to find out it's no use trying to bite) the nicer they'll be later. Just let that first bite come (don't provoke it to do it but if it happens... ah you'll see)!

let her bite you, once you do you will realise it isn't that bad you will get your confidence around her and time will help

Firstly theres definately nothing wrong with having that " respect " you speak of for snakes.
Just keep telling yourself that the little guys cant do much damage and as you get more relaxed with handeling him/her , him/her will also relax and youll both get used to it together...

what i did was put my hand in my snappy snakes enclosure, and shut my eyes. then you cant react when it bites becuase u dont know its going to bite and by the time you realise the snake has already bitten. and, it doesnt hurt, usually draws a little blood. but now i dont mind it. lol.

Mine haven't drawn blood yet.. had two marks when the water thought i was food (hehe oops). Very upset as i have always wanted a scar and i thought a python bite would rock!... i'm sure i'll change my mind when my water is massive and wants to eat me again and i can't stop crying in pain... ah well!
Tell us when you come to the conclusion that it's not too scary!

What's already been said, get bitten then you'll know that it doesn't hurt.

horsenz, i can totally relate to you your feelings, i'm exactly the same.
I can handle other peoples snakes but when it comes to my 2 boys, i S*%T myself, hands go sweaty, it's really fustrating.
Both my kids and my hubby have all been tagged by both snakes, i'm yet to be bitten.........hehehe.
I'd love nothing more than to get over this silly fear i have.

Its taken me nearly 10 years to not sweat when im handling the snakes. What cured me was when I had to look after them all myself for a month and got tagged daily, they had to be cared for or I let them die so I did it and now ive got all the guts in the world with them even the water python who just loves to bite having to feed a 20kg 7 ft python didnt really help though, she could have eaten me lol..

Like everyone else has told you, if he bites you will soon see that it doesn't hurt. I had never handled a snake in my life until I got my first babies ( 3 coastals ) sadly these guys all escaped and I only have my 5 and a half foot female left. However I went to a snake handling show and that week put a deposit on my first snake. Fear gone no problems. Now I can't believe I made so much fuss over them in the first place. I am in the process of purchasing my fifth snake a 5ft male coastal and want to get a pair of olives and a pair of Bredli although I am a little scared (not of the snakes, of my mother) I am also in the process of designing an escape proof enclosure for these guys when I get em. Cheers and have fun getting to know your little guy he's cute

When i first got mine I let it tag me but every time she striked her mouth would always be closed but then came the day where she had mouth open teeth ready and she really did tag me this time she got over it real good and quick showed her that i wasnt scared of her biting I think its the delayed action of them striking out like that.... that it gives you that nerveousness feeling.... You overcome it in time...

Cute lil snake though At that size you might find it'll even have trouble breaking the skin They truly don't hurt.
