Pregnancy

Hi all,
Just wondering how many women on here have been pregnant and still handled their reptiles and cleaned enclosures?, my doctor told me not to touch them and not to clean their enclosures once i fall pregnant due to the risk of salmonella contraction which would lead to the fetus being miscarried? Any info would be good.

I suppose it carries the same risk as eating real mayonnaise etc when pregnant. I would imagine with basic hygiene procedures (ie washing your hands well after handling) it would be fine.

I mean, how many people on here have contracted salmonella from their snakes?

I didn't have snakes when I was pregnant, and I hardly ate anything at all for the first five months anyway, so I'm not much help on personal experience.

well if you consider it the risk of getting when pregnant is the same as getting it when not pregnant, so if your hygiene is good, and so far you have stayed free from salmonella poisoning you should be fie while pregnant as well. just remember to always wash your hands with a disinfectant

That was what I meant, but you put it much better .

You don't really need disinfectant if you use hot water and soap. Single Twinkle Twinkle Little Star twice while washing your hands and that should be long enough!!

my friend has 14 snakes and cleaned all their enclosures while pregnant. she just gave birth to a healthy boy last week.

she always washes her hands before touching and cleaning anyway but she was fine through it all.

lol use disinfectant. you can do that all you want but unless you have excellent washing hand technique you'll find it isnt very effective, any soap with a disinfectant in it will be good. lol i got examined on washing hands at uni. lol i guess scrubbing in is of no use if you stuff it up

It can also be caught from cats and imagine all the people out there who are pregnant and own cats. You just need to use common sense and be on the ball with being hygenic. Most people are anyway. If you are really concerned use gloves when cleaning and maybe don't handle your snakes as much.

The problem with cats during pregnancy is actually toxoplasmosis - much more serious and easier to contract. It can cause serious birth deformities.

I just checked and I don't have my facts wrong, you can catch salmonella from cats. I thought I had it right and just checked on a pregnancy website. I have a 5 month old baby boy and was sure I remembered them telling me about it when I was pregnant, but as pregnancy and kids tend to addle the brain wasn't sure till I checked it out.
