Prices Falling!

Yeh URS i think jeff and others have put plenty of thought into this pet shop thing in NSW.I would rather see dealers licences being sold to individuals or companies wishing to specialise and employ suitably qualified staff that way the animals should get the right care.

RE: Prices Falling!

oldfella,

This is what they have done in QLD when the shops up there came on line about 12 months ago I think it was. All shops that wish to get a dealers licences in QLD have had to put a staff memder thought a reptile keeping course that it approved by NPWS up there.

Here is an other in instance for you all of price falling.
8 years ago ridge tailed monitors we were breeding in quite good numbers here and selling them quite easily for $1000+ now the same monitors are worth $150ea.

I recall when we dropped the price of these monitors to around $500ea we recieved a number of call from other breeders telling us we are selling to cheap and to put our price up, all I could do when ask to do that is LOL.

For instance back around 8 years ago we were selling male womas $2000, females around $3500+
People still sell womas for that much in some cases, or in the case of WA, even more - some of the WA sites have wild caught womas advertised for $5,000 each! Eight years ago I knew of people selling Tanami womas for the same prices they're going for now $1,300-$1500 for males, $2,000-$2,500 for females. Then, as now, there were more expensive ones for sale too.

Some species have gone up in price quite dramatically; eight years ago some people were selling top quality blonde macs for $80 each and bredli were selling for as little as $100-$150. The NSW market opening up boosted the prices of these species dramatically, particularly the childreni complex. The rescheduling of bredli in Victoria bumped their prices up by a heck of a lot almost overnight, at least on the local market (suddely the pet shops could sell them, and you could keep them on a basic license. Pet shops were selling them for $500, when just months earlier you could pick them up for $150 from a breeder). It will be interesting to see what happens with woma prices when they are allowed into pet shops in Victoria; it will be the first time they've been exposed to a really large number of people - currently (or at least until recently) only SA has had them in shops.

RE: Re: Prices Falling!

Even though the womas are cheap at that price, try and get a female for it. Most breeders prefer to sell as pairs only and then they still have to unload their excess males. The clutch rates seem to be around 50/50 give or take. So if I had ppl asking for females and ppl asking for pairs, I would be selling if the pairs first so you don't end up with a heap of males as this person possible has done.

I don't mean to argue with you here john but I bought my first bredli 7 yrs ago from a vic breeder when they were schedule 3 and paid $300 and at the time they were all 300 - 350. I can recall tim(URS) back then was around the same price. Maybe there was one or 2 breeders at 150 but i certainly never saw them advertised that cheap.

Sdaji,

There all way have been bargins around price wise. I was talking about that standed price of woma's back then.

As for the bredli's at that price back then i do not recall ever seeing them at that price if I did i would have purchased them all. the lowest price that I have on my books for purchasing bredlis back around that time was $180ea and that was purchasing 30 hatchlings (not feeding) of them to get that price.

Pet shops here in SA would be luck to sell 1 woma a year because most of the people who want them have now been in the reptile game for sometime and will no who the breeders are and go direct to them. All so most shops will not out lay the kind of money people want when selling them to a shop because by the time the shop has marked the price up on it would it would be out of just about every one's price range that walking in there door.

How are you going in regards to the breeding of your south west Queensland form of woma?
I would be very interested in seeing afew picks of the adults.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Prices Falling!

As your no doubt aware of I have just the male your looking for. My male has been with Roy Pales for two breeding seasons but shows no interest in his female. It might be time to try it with yours if your interested. I don't think Roy would really mind and besides it seems almost silly not to try. If you like pm me for further discussions. Wouldn't it be cool to breed them before Steve Irwin does so.
Cheers Dave
