It comes down to demand mostly. The more common a breed of snake is the cheaper it will become in time GTPs will go down in price, but not for a while yet.

Newtothis,in my oppinion there is onley limited buyers of class 2 reptiles in NSW,so the price will drop, very limited market set up here, you have to find someone who has finance, appropriate licencse and willing to buy.Quite a few in captivity in NSW already and i can honestly say i dont know of any herp friends with a class 2 that would pay 5k for a juvenile and those that could would already have purchased as last season plenty were available.I refer to NSW as i dont know the lisensing requirements in other states if they are on a high scedule there it dont help, you need an unrestricted market place to maintain momentum in sales.

hi zulu,
as far as i know we can have 2 on our licence in qld, but that also includes womas and other restricted reptiles, so if we have a woma we can only have one gtp, unless we have a restricted licence and then can have as many as we want.....
cheers,
steve..............

Sorry if this is a bit off topic from the original post but Steve I've always been trying to find what species constitute 'restricted reptiles' here in Qld .. I imagine it's in the legislation somewhere but do you know what species they classify as 'restricted'... I guess GTPs & Womas are a good start but are there any others?

steve.............. | Thanks steve,so they are restricted in QLD for most purposes, hopefully herps like GTPs and womas will be lowered in categories to allow swarms of cashed up little fish to have a feed ,just a matter of keeping scavengers like the NPWS away, preferably on the bottom where they belong

pmsl zulu,
thats about it,
hi matt and chanty,
it's not easy to find the list, but all the Endangered and vens are restricted, gtp's aren't on the list because they are suspect exotic but because they are endangered, i haven't looked into other reptiles but i'm sure if you look up the web site you will find a list somewhere, lol,
i'm sure trueblue or ad can add more as they have been listed in the elite class, pmsl...............

Ok had a look,
The "green python Morelia viridis" is classed as a international.
"Other than animals of the Australian population"
So by this i would hazard a guess that unless you can prove to the department that they are from Australian stock you will have to upgrade your licence.
Matt

From what I understand only GTP's and Womas are on the restricted license and venomous of course. If you have more than 2 of each/both you need the restricted license.

GTP's are exotics?
Why are they classed as such? Just curious.

Because the vast majority of GTP's in this country are not from this country. It was basically decided it was far too hard to separate the local and exotic GTP's

Many of the rules for restricted are under review at the moment so what is classed as restricted now might not be shortly. They are also reviewing what pet shops etc can sell. This might have some flow on effects in the market.
