Hi!
I'm really confused as to exactly how snakes see the world. Do they have heat vision - blurry blotchy images of living things - or can they see like we can? Are they colourblind? Those sort of random thoughts that always whirl around my head when I'm in maths .
If you know anything about snake vision, I'd be interested to hear it. I'm not even sure how much research has been done on the topic.

They have both rods and cones in their eyes, as we do, just in very different proportions. Their colour vision is far less detailed than ours, so while they do see in colour it's probably very dull. Their shape and movement is good though, it needs to be for climbing and hunting. Obviously climbers and insect-eaters have better vision than cave or burrowing species, who detect their prey via heat.
The infrared thing is interesting - their pits are hooked up to the visual part of their brains, so they "see" heat the same way they see other things.

ya the tongue flicking is how they smell, no noses, they pull molecules of smell into their mouth where it is collected by the johnsons organ, which converts it basically into smell.
as for sight, it depends on the snake, alot of north american snakes like the rattler and adders have heat sencing pits which combines with the accute sence of movement making them deadly at night which is when they like to hunt somewhat being desert dwellers.
