I have some nice pics to share of my latest patient. You may recall my thread (I can't find it) of a little snake that pythons73 rescued off some kids who were ill treating him. And obviously they'd had him for quite some time and allowed him to become a slithering scab - 2 thirds of his belly all scabbed up and sore, retained shed all over him - see first pic.
Today, I think he is looking better. He has received daily treatments. A couple of scabs have fallen off but he still has a long way to go. His first big hurdle is upon him as he is getting ready to shed. Shedding can be harsh on snakes with open wounds. As they rub the skin off they take the scabs with it and can cause bleeding. Last year I lost a little python with similar injury but no where near as bad, but he bled to death when he shed. So keep your fingers crossed this little guy will pull through. Will be able to tell you in a couple days. I have called him Rusty. The amount of dead scales falling off him, its like flaky rust or dog hair. So Here's some photos of Rusty

Just a couple of pics of him enjoying (not) a special bath to help sooth his sores and hopefully help his shed. You can see the water filling up with lots of little scales - they are endless. I held him under the tap one night - I think he liked it, he didn't move. But the end of the scales just wasn't happening.

Thank you
We believe he is wild but was caught and been in captivity for a long time. I have never seen a wild snake in that sort of condition. The kids reckoned it was their snake but apparently did not try too hard to take him back. I would like to try get him on permanent care - but thats a long way off yet, will cross that bridge later.

Wow mysnakesau he looks so much better than on the first thread you posted about him. I know you say he has a long way to go but he is looking 10x the snake he was. Whats he like when your handling him?

I have only had him for almost 4 weeks now & I am guessing he is probably 2 years old. Yes the eyes always look ghastly eh?
Thank you everybody for your wonderful support. CLare it is really great to hear such feedback. It can be difficult to tell sometimes, when you see them every day. He is actually a fantastic handler. I do receive the odd nip but I like to be gullable to think that he knows I am trying to help him and he is really a gentle fellow. I don't know if its a male, but he sounds better than s/he or it.

Poor Rusty has developed RI. It isn't bad. We have already started antibioticsso have caught it early. We visited the vet this morning who reckons he doesn't look too bad but I think I disagree. He is still in shed - eyes cleared from the blue stage a week ago but still no sign of his old skin shifting and he feels very dry and even having difficulty moving. I pinch his skin it doesn't fall back into place, its like he is dehydrated but he also has that layer of old skin that just won't lift away. I tried rubbing his head with a wet cotton bud hoping to break the skin but it didn't work. And all that time Rusty did not protest and I wasn't holding him while I did it. He curled up in the palm of my hand and did not move while I had a gentle poke at other areas of his body to see if I could see any lift in the skin.
Its like he has lost his fight, like he wants to give up. He is not happy I keep going over and peering through the air holes, expecting to find him belly up.
Tomorrow I am going to the chemist to buy him some paedialyte to see if we can restore him, and I might start trying to force some small food into him to try and give him some strength. He's 3 foot and only weighs 400g. So try some nourishment that won't stretch him. I am not ready to give up on him yet, but am I just causing more suffering? I'll try the food first, then we'll see what happens.
Keep your fingers crossed for him With picking up the RI I can't keep his baths up and in trying to increase the humidity all I did was fog his tub with coldness I have ordered a special hospital cage for him with light fittings and the works so maybe the tub isn't warm enough regardless of the temperatures being where it should be he feels cold.
Hopefully its just an episode and he will come out better than ever.
