A question to the people who have large size collections (over a dozen ). Where do you get your feed (eg mice, rats etc) from? Do you buy in bulk and if so where and what price? Or do you breed your own mice etc?
What do you find the most cost effective way?
thx

I buy bulk, but am going to start breeding my own soon...it's going to be cheaper, and means I don't have to mission it to the pet store to buy liveys for my scrubs.

I breed my own but to be honest with you it is only worhwhile if you have the time to keep them clean. If you let them go for to long they stink big time. So long as you are prepared to clean every few days then breed son breed lol

Yup, if you have a few snakes you are better off breeding your own. But, as Cwazza says, you must make time to keep 'em clean the stinky little buggas Mice smell worse than rats too |

I breed my own. I have about 200 adult female rats and 80 adult super mice. With these I am nearly self sufficant. I try and freeze about 1000 adult rats through winter while everyone are cooled down. Gives me a bit of a head start to summer.

Im much more small time. I run five trays with 3 to 4 rats in each. They breed fairly constantly and I feed a mix of freshly dispatched and thawed. I have access to free frozen mice when required. I can handle this amount without difficulty. I had trouble keeping larger amounts in a hygeinic state as per CW's comment. I let them keep the first litter.

I find my rats will eat the pinkies about 50% of the time or less, would this be due to something I am doing wrong or are they just bad parents?

I always seperate the pregnant rats to have their litters. I lose maybe 1% of the babies these days.
In terms of time, build a rack system, takes me not even 5 minutes a day and an hour once a week to maintain mine.

mine are doing hell alot better since i put them in bird cages right now i have a 5 month old male in with a 4 month old female. and a 4 month old female in with an adult male. once pregnant i will be removing the males. and leaving the girls in there own cages. all my cages takes about an hour and half to clean. they also get fresh fruit and vegies everyday that way there is more calcium and vitamins for the snakes.
