Gavin has been breeding for at 20yrs or more, from what I've heard around the traps. Sells rats and mice for feeders(frozen). I would recommend him to all newcomers. Cheers Cheryl

Thus the theory goes soft furred animals would be better feeders as thats what our reps have been designed from evolution for here in Australia.
From memory thats the explanation the Vet gave me.
This vet is a very good Herp Vet here on the GCoast..the best herp vet other vets tell me and also Animal Parks and Herpers....so as different as he is at times and his ideas...he is not an Idiot.
Sooo...to get this thread back on track.
Serpentounge I know what your saying and thats what I always thought, but with this from the Vet Im questioning it a bit.
Thus
Has anybody heard or had their herps getting intestinal blockages from Course Rat Fur?

Although I was told not to feed guinea pigs as there was way to much fur on them to digest? so in saying that I'm guessing possibly too much fur may be hard to digest for the snake?

Unfortunately for some vets all it takes is one case for them to condemn a certain practice.
I've never heard of it and if it was as prevalent as the vet is making out, we all would have heard about it numerous times. |

You could be right Chimera.
Anybody else have any experience in this matter?

It was suggested we avoid furry food as after all, all poo is is the undigestable part of the meal- basically fur. Instead of rats we fed pinky rabbits which are about 100 grams each. IMO they are equal to a medium say 150 gram rat because they are all nutrition with very little waste. After using Rabbits there was almoast no waste and no problem with prolapse. The animal now eats rats, quails, chooks mice and rabbits without problem. I guess the pinky furless food gave it just enough of a rest for the muscles to tone up and prevent prolapsing. Perhaps the same would apply if an animal had an internal problem causin blockage which given time may sort its self out. | | | |
