I feed both, rats and chickens. I don't know the nutritional value of each and quite frankly I'm not that bothered either. But I feed mine both just to vary the diet a little bit more. I agree with GEKKOCHA in the sense that the stool is rather loose. I vary the diet from time to time just to keep the snakes "on-their-toes" so to speak. I find it also helps when I can't get rats, I'll settle for a chicken and vice versa.

I think that the nutritional value also depends on what is being fed to the target animal, feeding food items absolute rubbish does not lead to good nutrition in the most nutritious animals.

Cheers

btw great photos guys and snakeaddict that is the best bhp morph I have ever seen jj.

Rats aint rats; Chickens aint chickens and snakes aint snakes. The class of animals will determine what is best. Old fat animals/birds are different to lean young animals. Breeders have different requiremnents to growers. At the end of the day I doubt that the performance of many captive snakes is limited by food. To work out what is best you first need to work out what you are trying to achieve and decide what parameters are importannt. eg cost, availability, growthweight, mess

I've posted his link before, here's the nutritional value of most commonly fed prey items. It's quite interesting

duno103,- yes i agree with you 100%, what you feed your rats/mice would have a huge impact on how healthy they are. All my rodents only get feed 100% grain type food. ie horse/pony pellets, pig pellets and working horse mix. All are made of natural grains etc.

Correct me if i am wrong but it looks to me like its rabbits, then chickens then rats as far as % of protein to fat goes. Rabbits being top of the list.

What is the protein, energy and fat requirement for captive Australian Pythons?

I wouldnt be surprised, infact im pretty confident as thats how most people breed them, that the rats that were used on that nutritional study were rats bred in those terrible lab type tubs hence the higher fat content and lower nutritional value. If they were bred in much much larger enclosures i have a funny feeling that the out come may be different.

Its not often I disagree with you Rob but I think you are going overboard with this fat rat thing. If you keep the size under about 100 grams( half a banana) rats wont be fat regardless of how they have been kept . Its the big fat mothers that are the problem.

Like a person that eats good food and excise compared to a person who eats good food and just sites down all day is as healthy as the person who excise instead of being lazy? So that means a rat who eats its food and sleeps is not as healthy as a rat that eats the right amount but a eat that eats well and excises is more healthy then a rat that eats the right amount and doesn’t excise and i would feed the rats that excise over the ones that don’t .
