RBBS in the wild

A while ago, my husband was on a fishing trip with a couple of his mates, drifting down the river in there canoes, when one of them spotted this beautiful red bellied black snake. His mates thought he was a bit weird when he paddled over to it to get a closer photo.
I just stumbled across these photos last night while looking for something else, so i thought i would share them with you.

Did it move on or stay in the same spot. It has the look that rbbs get when they are trapped in netting. I know there is no netting in the pic.

Here's an excuse to post a pic of a young one I took in 2007 at Lake Eacham. It was sunning itself right next to a busy walking path. I was there with a freind from Brisbaneand was telling her how a few weeks prior I had nearly trod on one at this spot, and she replies very calmly "There's one now".

It was all of a metre away but down a small embankment, so we both managed to snap a few photos with out even disturbing it. The nasturtium leaves beside it give an indication of its size. I would not have hung around to photograph the one I nearly stood on, it was not too impressed with me disturbing is sunbake.

It is emaciated. Also, I'm not sure whether it's actually there or if it's just a camera artifact, but it looks like it might have nasal discharge. Certainly not a healthy looking animal.

Interesting pictures, definitely worth sharing, thank you.

Thanks for all your interest. He said it was alive, but very quiet. Usually they get out of the way as quickly as possible making them hard to photograph.
He photographed a tiger snake a week or two earlier, i will ask him where the photos are.

Me being new to the whole herp addiction am still finding it hard to understand why you would approch a venomous snake in the wild? Isn't there a chance that it would strike?

G'day Seth,

The biggest misconception about venomous snakes is that they are aggressive. All venomous snakes in Australia will hold their ground or retreat when approached by a human, they will never advance on them with the intent to deliver a bite unless they are cornered or unable to escape and feel threatened by their presence.
