Re: Feeding baby Darwin

Ok guys and gals, I need some advise please!!

Most of you have probably read I acquired my first snake about 1 week ago, a baby Darwin Carpet. She is going along famously, not so snappy at all anymore, even after only 1 handling. The trouble is I was due to feed her last night, and she didnt take it I know I shouldnt be worrying yet, but my query is this....The guy in the Rep Shop said to feed her a fuzzy mouse, which seems far tooooo big????? Anyhow, I presented a pinky last night and she refused it. Her head is no bigger than my thumbnail - I just thought a fuzzy mouse??? my god???? A friend of mine said no way, you can snap their jaws from a too bigger feed. I would love to hear your views and tips on this, I will keep up with the pinky for the time being.

Snap their jaws, thats a good one. lol You will be amazed at what they can fit down.
the snake should be able to take a fuzzy but start on pinkys is ok.
How did you offer the mouse?

Ahh, a opportunity to show my carpet photos again. This is was a wild snake could eat.

DON'T take this as a recommendation of how to feed captive snakes, wild snakes would only feed like this a couple of times a year.

Once you see the little fella eat, you will realise how snakes jaws are not joined in the middle like most creatures. A fuzzy will be no problem for him.
Then you can go smack your friend in the back of the head for putting that idea in your head. It's frustrating when ppl who don't know what they are talking about give out bad advice.
You can also try leaving the fuzzy with your snake in a dark room.
Some snakes will only eat when they have a little privacy.
No need to stress btw, he will eat for you.

it takes sometime for some snake to get a handle on what they should do and feeding is one of them, juv snake can last along time before they need a feed up to two months, just keep offering the snakie ever second day, dont get impatiant and try and force feed because you will stress the snake and prolong the proccess, small fuzzie mice should be offered (frozen) if that doesnt work try live, try not to offer larger mice as they can also stress the snake as well, dont freak out it may take a couple of goes but you will be alright....did the breeder say it was feeding before you recieved it? it should be before it is forsale.

Thank you all so very very much for all your advise, it has really helped me immensely!!! (both psychologically and intellectually lol). I found so much information from all of you, I feel so much better and relieved. That is why this site is so wonderful, especially for us newbies! I tried a fuzzy last night, and boy, she was really interested - much moreso than the other night, but still only sat about an inch from it all night, going back and forth smelling it etc. At least this was more action than what I had seen previously. I was intent on watching her from a distance in the dark (bonks her head and laughs at herself) but fell asleep, only to wake up in the middle of the night - she had moved away. I will not freak yet thanks to all of you, I will give her another day or so before I try again. My temps are 33 in the hot and 29 in the cold spots - is this acceptable?

one good way would be to pierce the skin to expose some blood, I bet you the snake will take it!

When offering food, if the snake shows any interest, quickly pull the food away, wait a few secs, then offer it again, kind off teasing the snake a bit, then pull it away slower and let the snake follow the fuzzy, when you stop she will probably go for it.
Make sure the fuzzy is still warm, after defrosting in hot water.
That worked for me, when I had a problem.
