If I ever get a hot it would be a RBBS - they were the first wild snakes I ever saw and I still consider them the most spectacular elapid (though if you look though Rick shines book, you will see some yellow and black tigers that are magnificent).
As for free handling, yes I would work towards it. But you have to remember snakes can have a "bad scale day", one day it might be in a bitey mood.

I guess it comes down to the day you say you will not get bitten you will.

Do you think RBBS would be ok for a first elapid??

Fuscy the yellow & black tigers are south/west tigers - I have seen some beautifull ones.

ricko, Im not going to answer that question on here It depends on the snake, and what im doing with them. I never free handle to 'show friends" but with my quiet snakes (not saying what species) i just move them around for cleaning etc free handling.... they are so quiet you will think your most quiet carpet is a monster

Thanks for that Westie. The Shop "Scales and Tails" had a B & G before WA allowed keeping reptiles, I think that the tassie ones are also B & Y. I've seen footage of Sir Crickey freehanding one.
Can anyone confirm/refute?

I've seen a heap of tigers but the most beautiful one was on Phillip Island. It was fairly large (about 4ft), jet black above with a really rich yellow belly, I'd kill for a tiger like that! Red bellies are still my favourite snake, I'll get some as soon as I have the space. I used to free handle heaps of elapids, but one large dose of venom was enough to keep me careful and decide that freehandling was pretty stupid, although I have a couple of adders which are about as tame as any animal can get and I can understand why people do it, as much as they really shouldn't.
