Research it! Research it!

Im new here. Ive been looking at herping for near a year now, and doing a lot of research in the past few months before making decisions, a commitment.
I have asked quite a few questions too, but tried to keep 'em specific to issues when Ive exhausted all other avenues. Outside of that? Research.
But I seem to keep reading some pretty dodgy threads like " I just got my xxxxxx python today, and Im just wondering how big it will get?" You know, that sort of rubbish. Sadly, these threads seem to clog the forum and more important ones just get pushed down. It's just laziness.
Could the admins put up a page that when people sign in they have to read and agree with? Stating some simple facts etc etc...
Seriously, it gives the rest of us newbs a bad (worse?) name and is kinda dangerous for the snake as well.
Just a thought!

This suggestion was discussed at length a couple of weeks ago when folks were bagging out newbies. I don't know if anything was done, but admin might be working on a welcome e-mail suggesting where to find answers to commonly-asked questions.

...Unfortunately the more tolerant we become the more rubbish we are forced to tolerate...

Toon - Thankyou for pointing out that it isn't just the 'older' members who are fed up with the mindless nonsense - a desire to be spoon fed information seems to be more and more prevalent - your post was a refreshing change...

well said toon, research is an invalauble tool us humans are able to do, i also found the wiki a great tool as it has links to this sorta info such as most common question, how big certain breeds of snakes groww etc. etc. etc.

Couldn't agree more, but when a newby asks a simple question it is surprising to see that there are strange answers appearing.

So as it is clogging up the forum, it also shows how many members really do not know what they are talking about some of the time.

Cool, Im not alone here. I'm not bagging newbs, I am a newb to both this place and herping, I'm just suggesting something that to my mind seems a little obvious. Honestly, if it would help, I can gladly send anyone in the above category all the thousands and millions of bookmarked links, PDF files etc if it would help in some way. Millions of bookmarked links may or may not be a truthful statement..

Maybe a system to encourage people to submit caresheets etc could be set up. The admins could allocate points to the submitter based on the degree of detail in the sheet. Some of our sponsors could maybe make some offers based on these points. IE 10% off your purchase if you cash in xx points, or simply sell products for xx points. Advertising space could be offered to sponsors in return for their support. It's fine for everyone to say "yep, we should have a section for answers to all the dumb questions!" But someone has to write the answers and they should be encouraged/rewarded for their time.
Just a thought...from a newbie all jam packed with dumb questions!!

Questions aren't the problem, it is the repetition of the questions which are the problem, unfortunately, most people either don't want to use the search function, or all they find in there are threads with people saying 'use the search function' and refusing to give information to newbs, instead making fun of them. i think some of the more 'experienced' members on this site need to grow up and either help, or not post in those threads. People may be giving wrong information, and that is not a good thing, but at least they are not just posting pure sarcasm. If i have the knowledge, i will post it, despite being a relative newb. Thats my rant for today.
ps, i think caresheets on wiki are a great idea, and not just for snakes, but for other reptiles and amphibians as well.
Boo.

Yes this would be good but newbies wouldn't really know what the commonly asked questions are, or they are just too excited to start typing.

Repetitive posts could be deleted to avoid this problem and a nice little PM to the author to explain why their post was deleted and tell them to search the forum
